Ecuador says hacking attempts doubled after it ended Assange asylum

WikiLeaks said Australian Consul Clare West would visit the Ecuadoran embassy on Monday to request that the mission hand over Assange's belongings.

The U.S. agreed to not seek the death penalty against Julian Assange in a back-channel negotiation with Ecuador to get him evicted from the South American country's London embassy, a report said Monday.

Jennifer Robinson told Sky News on Sunday that Ecuador is making "pretty outrageous allegations" to justify allowing British police into its embassy on Thursday in order to take Assange into custody.

Ecuadorian president Lenín Moreno had previously chastised Assange for skateboarding indoors, urging him to change some of his behaviour inside the embassy, including spending more time cleaning up after his pet cat.

Assange was arrested by United Kingdom police last week on a bail-jumping charge after Ecuador revoked his asylum and evicted him from its London embassy, where he had lived for over seven years. In 2012, Assange was accused of rape in Sweden, which led him to flee to the embassy where he spent six years and 10 months living in a small room. Sweden is considering reviving the investigation.

But he said the hacking group Anonymous, which has taken credit for cyberattacks on government institutions in the United States and Britain, had made a threat.

That stint ended on Thursday when Ecuador revoked his asylum and he was arrested by British police.

Moreno gas said Assange abused Ecuador's goodwill, mistreated embassy staff and used his perch to try to interfere in other country's political affairs. More than 70 British legislators have urged Javid to give priority to a case involving rape allegations ahead of the U.S. request.

"Any attempt to destabilize is a reprehensible act for Ecuador because we are a sovereign nation and respectful of the politics of each country", he said in his first English-language interview since Assange's arrest last week.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced last week that Assange was being charged for conspiracy to commit computer intrusion.

The conspiracy charge against Assange seems meant to sidestep limits on prosecution potentially arising from the US Constitution's First Amendment guarantee of press freedom.

Moreno also reiterated the claim made by the Ecuadorean government that Assange's hygiene and behavior constituted an "aggressive campaign against Ecuador" from inside the embassy. In the meantime, he is expected to seek prison medical care for severe shoulder pain and dental problems, WikiLeaks has said.
