Storm system heading to Alabama produces tornado near MS State

The cold front is forecast to reach the Interstate 95 corridor Monday morning, bringing significantly cooler weather and drier air.

The system is expected to hit the state late Sunday night and the risk of severe weather lasts until around dawn, according to the National Weather Service. The Angelina County Sheriff's Office says an 8-year-old and 3-year-old died after the tree hit the back of the auto in Lufkin, about 115 miles (185 kilometers) northeast of Houston. No injuries were reported there, but officials said several businesses and vehicles were damaged.

"It looks like a storm came up through Louisiana and into MS and exploded in Monroe County", Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said.

Some of the greatest threats include scattered tornadoes, wind gusts reaching 70 miles per hour and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.

Robertson County Texas Sheriff Gerald Yezak (YEZ'-ik) told The Associated Press that a suspected tornado hit Franklin on Saturday, overturning mobile homes and damaging other residences.

"Some storms may also produce large hail or torrential downpours resulting in localized flash flooding", the weather service tweeted. A tornado was reported in the area at the time. Damage was reported early Saturday evening in Vicksburg, Mississippi, as severe thunderstorms rumbled through the city.

University spokesman Sid Salter said some debris, possibly carried by the tornado, was found on campus, but no injuries were reported and no buildings were damaged. Franklin is located about 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of Dallas.

The Washington Post went on to report that an elderly man was killed "when a tree fell on his trailer in Hamilton, Mississippi".

Population centers in the zone of greatest risk, 4 out of a possible 5 on the Storm Prediction Center's scale, include Monroe and Alexandria, Louisiana. Some people had to be extricated from damaged dwellings.

Georgia's Augusta National Golf Club is included in the slight risk area Sunday as the Masters golf tournament concludes.
