US House approves net neutrality bill but legislation faces long odds

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a pro-net neutrality bill largely on party lines.

Siding with Pai was FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, who said the United States had turned the page on the failed broadband policies of the Obama Administration.

"Today's bipartisan vote by the House of Representatives to pass the Save the Internet Act reflects the overwhelming public consensus that strong net neutrality consumer protections are vital for the internet ecosystem and the digital economy".

Only one Republican joined with Democrats on the measure: Rep. Bill Posey, R-Fla. Advocates warned Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell against following through on his earlier statement that the bill would be "dead on arrival in the Senate if it passed the House".

Net neutrality backers argue that clear rules are needed to prevent dominant internet service providers like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T from blocking or throttling services or websites for competitive reasons. This legislation will put net neutrality protections back in place that keep the internet fair and open for families and small businesses in New Hampshire.

With net neutrality, some Democrats sounded an optimistic note that the House's vote - coupled with sustained public pressure from net neutrality supporters - could shift their fortunes. Without net neutrality protections, our art and voices are subject to discriminatory actors who hold the power to silence our community. The debate has shifted every time control of Congress and the FCC has changed parties, resulting in years of competing Democratic and Republican proposals and a flurry of lawsuits - yet little progress in crafting a lasting federal solution.

The latest legislative effort comes amid a legal showdown over the repeal. Aides to the president also issued an official notice Monday that they would recommend a veto of the bill, arguing it would "return to the heavy-handed regulatory approach of the previous administration". "The overwhelming show of support for the Save the Internet Act proves how important and popular Net Neutrality has become". "I'm proud to stand with them in that fight". Some agreed not to enforce the laws pending the outcome of the Mozilla case.
