Candida auris: When hospitals become a source of infection

Candidemia is often the most common bloodstream infection in many hospitals and ICUs across this country.

The New Jersey Hospitals Association also called on the medical profession to reduce the use of antibiotics so that there's less opportunity for drug-resistant organisms such as Candida auris to develop. This is more so because they are likely to be in settings like hospitals and nursing homes where the infection is more prevalent.

"Most C. auris cases in the United States have been detected in the New York City area, New Jersey, and the Chicago area", according to the CDC. After looking at people in contact with those first 77 cases, the CDC determined that the quick-spreading fungus had infected 45 more.

According to a report published in 2016 by the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, scientists first discovered the fungus in a patient who had an ear infection in Japan in the year 2009.

The Candida Auris attacks patients with a weakened immune system.

"I think the most important aspect for control of Candida auris is that outbreaks are reported to the CDC and that the healthcare centers have up-to-date information to treat patients and contain outbreaks", she said.

In the United Kingdom, an intensive care unit had to shut down after they found 72 people there were infected with candida auris, and in Spain, a hospital found 372 patients had the fungus. A blood test detected the germ, and he died after 90 days in the hospital, but the germ survived.

A study the British government funded projects that if policies are not put in place to slow the rise of drug resistance, 10 million people could die worldwide of all such infections in 2050, eclipsing the eight million expected to die that year from cancer.

Most fungal and bacterial infections can be stopped using drugs. Medical researchers are attempting to determine where C. auris originated, how it was able to spread in such a short period of time, why some strains are resistant to conventional treatment and how the fungus is able to wreak havoc and death so quickly. The most vulnerable are the elderly people, those who are already sick and newborns.

In the U.S., two million people contract resistant infections annually, and 23,000 die from them, according to the official CDC estimate. For immediate solutions, the advisory suggests, patients confirmed positive for infection caused by Candida auris should be kept in isolated rooms or with those with the same infection.

Nett said that not all standard laboratory diagnostic methods are created to accurately detect Candida auris relatively new species.

There has been an outbreak of a unsafe, drug-resistant fungus among medical facility patients in New Jersey, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported.

"In the fungal world, C.auris is a bad bug", says Dr Abdul Ghafur, Coordinator with the Chennai Declaration on AMR. Recently discovery of resistant fungi in addition to resistant bacteria, compounds the situation and raises the risk level to a new high.

Health officials are warning the public about a deadly fungus called Candida auris (C. auris).
