Donald Trump designates Iran's IRGC as terrorist organization

In a statement, Mr Trump said the "unprecedented step" recognises that "the IRGC is the Iranian government's primary means of directing and implementing its global terrorist campaign".

Addressing reporters following Trump's announcement, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned all banks and business of consequences to dealing with the Revolutionary Guards from now on.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the designation is meant to increase pressure on Iran, isolating it further and diverting some of the financial resources it uses to fund terrorism and militant activity in the Middle East and beyond.

Critics have warned that the move could open U.S. military and intelligence officials to similar actions by unfriendly governments.

The US has in the past blacklisted dozens of entities and people for affiliations with the IRGC, but not the organization as a whole.

The IRGC, a paramilitary organisation which was formed in the wake of Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution to defend the government, was already sanctioned by the US.

He said it could prompt Qassem Soleimani, the powerful commander of the Quds Force, the IRGC's elite foreign espionage and paramilitary contingent, to allow IRGC-controlled Shi'ite Muslim militias to retaliate against US forces in Iraq.

The Supreme National Security Council, in a statement carried by the official news agency IRNA, declared the United States to be a state sponsor of terrorism and both called the US Central Command and forces underneath it terrorist groups.

"#NetanyahuFirsters who have long agitated for FTO (Foreign Terrorist Organisation) of the IRGC fully understand its consequences for USA forces in the region".

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif also condemned the move as a "a (nother) misguided election-eve gift to [Israeli PM Benjamin] Netanyahu".

Mr Pompeo said its response was to "counter the Iranian regime's terrorism" and "help the people of Iran get back their freedom".

The IRGC has always been implicated in terrorist plots against the US military throughout the Middle East and provides major financial support to other known terrorist organizations such as Lebanese Hezbollah.

By designating the IRGC as a terrorist force, Mr Trump wants to "send a clear message" not only to the country but also to those still having an economic relationship with Iran, despite the ban issued by the United States during the summer of 2018.

"IRGC Qods Force activity has been uncovered and disrupted in Germany, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Kenya, Bahrain, Turkey, and others", the White Hosue disclosed in announcing the designation.

"The IRGC's elite Quds Force was previously designated, but this did not dissuade Iran from using its funding, weapons, and personnel to engage in deadly violence around the world", McCaul said in a statement.

Anticipating the designation, Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, wrote on Twitter that Trump "should know better than to be conned into another United States disaster". Tehran denies the charges.

The Trump administration is preparing to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps a "foreign terrorist organization" in an unprecedented move that could have widespread implications for US personnel and policy.

It controls the country's ballistic missiles and nuclear programmes, answers directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and owns a vast network of businesses ranging from oil and gas projects to construction and telecommunication. Tehran has warned that it has missiles with a range of up to 2000km, putting Israel and U.S. military bases in the region within reach.
