‘Volcano of Rage’: UN-backed Libyan government launches counteroffensive against Haftar’s army

Forces loyal to rival Libyan army commander Khalifa Hifter say they have seized control of the main airport in Libya's capital Tripoli, two days after Hifter ordered his forces to seize the seat of Libya's United Nations -backed government.

The multi-pronged operation, dubbed Burkan Al-Ghadab (Volcano of Rage), has already led to the capture of many military vehicles of Haftar's National Libyan Army, military spokesman Mohammed Gununu said. "We have formed an operative staff including units of the armed forces and the interior ministry".

"We strongly oppose any military action in Libya", the statement read, reiterating their support for UN-led efforts to bring elections and calling on all countries to support the "sustainable stabilisation of Libya".

In December Haftar met Prime Minister Fayez al-Serraj from the UN-backed government at a conference but refused to attend official talks.

On Saturday, the head of the GNA accused Haftar of "betraying" him after the latter launched his military offensive on Tripoli.

On Saturday he said pro-Haftar fighters were "progressing on several fronts.as planned" and that Tripoli would soon be captured.

Haftar must heed global warnings to halt his advance on Libya's capital, Italy's foreign minister said, as powers from the G7 club said there could be no military solution to the country's power struggle. It answers to the authorities based in eastern Libya, who are at odds with the UN-backed government.

After a pause overnight, fierce fighting flared anew on Sunday morning south of the capital between Haftar´s self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA) and forces backing the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA).

Residents of Misrata east of Tripoli told Reuters news agency that militias from their city had been sent to defend the capital.

Video has now emerged showing U.S. Navy Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) hovercraft approaching and landing on the beach in the town of Janzour, which is located just a few miles to the west of Tripoli.

A showdown between Hifter's army and the militias could plunge Libya into another spasm of violence, possibly the worst since the 2011 civil war that toppled and later killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Parallel government: The Tripoli-based interim government, the Government of National Accord (GNA), which was set up with United Nations backing in 2015, has been unable to enforce its authority in the entire country.

"To date, Haftar´s operation has mostly failed to go according to plan, and it has now galvanised western Libyan forces against him", said analyst Wolfram Lacher.

The country's oil installations should not be used by any group for political gain, it said.

"We are determined" to hold the talks, he said.
