Purdue Pharma lawsuit: Opioid maker settles with state of Oklahoma

He said Purdue was convinced to settle after being presented with an option that provides for almost $200 million for establishing a center at Oklahoma State University (OSU) that would take a national approach toward treating addiction. "In the coming weeks, the team and I will continue preparing for the trial 24/7, where we intend to hold the other defendants in this case accountable for their role in creating the worst public health crisis our state and nation has ever seen".

Lawyers in the case and a spokesman for Purdue declined to comment ahead of the planned announcement Tuesday.

Oklahoma sued 13 opioid manufacturers in all in 2017, accusing them of fraudulent marketing that led to thousands of overdoses and deaths. Back in September, a lawsuit was filed against Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, for failing to adequately monitor and control the sale of opioids.

Vermont is taking two more drug companies to court in the ongoing battle against opioid manufacturers. That action targets companies that manufactured, distributed and dispensed narcotic painkillers across the country, and those cities, towns and tribes are seeking damages in what some believe is the most complex litigation in USA history. Other cases, including Oklahoma's, are pending in state courts.

This month, company officials acknowledged that they were considering legal options, including filing for bankruptcy. "During the same five year timeframe, it will receive ongoing contributions of addiction treatment medicine, valued at $20 million". The reported $270 million settlement compares with Purdue Pharma's $35 billion OxyContin sales revenue stream between 1995 and 2015. The company allegedly persuaded doctors to prescribe - and overprescribe - the drug for a wide variety of ailments. Those lawsuits now threaten to push Purdue Pharma into bankruptcy.

Purdue is one of several firms named in the claim which alleged they used deceptive practices to sell opioids. Many patients became addicted to the potent painkillers, and large amounts of the drug were diverted to the black market.

The epidemic has prompted lawsuits by state and local governments accusing various drugmakers of contributing to the crisis. The epidemic has evolved to encompass illicit use of fentanyl, a synthetic ultrapowerful opioid that has caused a spike in overdoses and fatalities. Oklahoma estimated the opioid crisis would cost the state almost $9 billion, according to the Washington Post. In 2017, the White House Council of Economic Advisers placed the price tag much higher, at $504 billion for 2015. Of more than 3,000 Oklahomans admitted to hospitals past year for drug overdoses that they survived, 80 percent involved prescription opioids, he said. Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter filed the suit against Purdue, Johnson & Johnson, and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. back in 2017. The 1,600 lawsuits were consolidated before a federal judge in OH, who has pushed for a settlement ahead of a trial in October. She had been organizing a group of hundreds of mothers to go to the first day of the trial and stand outside with photos of their dead children. Three museums in Britain and the United States have turned down donations from the Sacklers, longtime patrons of the arts, in recent days.

"Millions of dollars were not enough".
