Jay-Z Celebrates Jordan Peele's 'Us' Movie's Box Office Success

Peele had impressed Hollywood with his first production, "Get Out", another horror film with heavy social commentary that won an Oscar as Best Original Screenplay and was the 10th most profitable film of 2017. "Us", just like "Get Out", is an original concept from the extraordinarily twisted mind of Jordan Peele and the fact that this film isn't a sequel or based on some comic puts it in a league of its own.

Us, the second directorial effort from Jordan Peele, pulled off a stunning debut, generating US$70 million from 3,741 North American locations. Though exit polls for Us (B CinemaScore, 80% overall PostTrak positive) were behind Get Out's (A- CinemaScore, 84% positive), that never stopped the box office momentum for Peele's latest.

The sheer openness when it comes to he interpretations is perhaps best summed up when Red (the doppelganger of Lupita Nyong'o's Adelaide) answers her double's cries to know who or what her family are with the simple response: "We're Americans".

The psychological thriller opened at No. 1 with the second-best opening weekend of the year behind Disney's Captain Marvel ($153 million). That margin is shrinking, however, thanks to the success of "Captain Marvel" and now "Us". The female-fronted tentpole added another US$34 million, taking its domestic tally past US$320 million. It hauled in $255 million at the box office globally - $33 million on its opening weekend. For Us, this was more than quadrupled, and Peele was able to work with a $20 million budget. Fourth spot went to CBS/Lionsgate's teen drama "Five Feet Apart", at $8.8 million (Sh885m). That's a strong result, considering it cost a modest $7 million to produce. The conclusion to the Dragon trilogy pocketed US$6.5 million in its fifth weekend in theatres, bringing its domestic total to US$145 million. The R-rated terrorist thriller - starring Dev Patel and Armie Hammer - follows the victims and survivors of the 2008 attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in India.
