Man arrested after kicking elderly woman on subway as bystanders shot video

A suspect is in custody for the brutal attack on an elderly woman on a subway train in New York City, the New York Police Department said on Saturday.

The video was widely circulated online, leading to the arrest of the man.

Gomez claimed the woman was "lying across the seat and wanted all other passengers to move", said she had a knife and threatened to stab him, according to this report by the New York Post.

As the 78-year-old woman attempts to defend herself from the man's attack, those with her on the train did not intervene.

The assault occurred in the early morning hours on March 10.

Authorities say the 36-year-old had been apprehended Saturday afternoon and was in custody.

He then yells something inaudible at her before looking directly at the camera and shouting: "WorldStar that, my n****r" - in reference to an infamous social media page filled with violent videos.

Marc Gomez faces charges of assault and harassment and is awaiting arraignment Saturday evening.

"It's awful", an MTA worker said, the New York Post reported.

The 78-year-old victim was treated and released from the hospital, the NYPD said, adding that she "is getting the care, advocacy and support needed".

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea implored witnesses to come forward in a tweet.
