Roberto Marrero, a high-ranking figure in Guaido's Popular Will party, was reportedly detained after a raid on his home by Venezuelan intelligence service SEBIN.

Guaido tweeted that he did not know where Marrero was, adding: "He must be released immediately".

Marrero lives in Caracas, near lawmaker Sergio Vergara - who said his residence was also searched by agents of what he called the "usurper regime" of embattled President Nicolas Maduro.

"Either he doesn't dare to jail me, or he's not in charge", Guaido, the leader of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, said during an appearance at a school. "We call for their immediate release and will hold accountable those involved", the spokesperson said in a statement. Vergara said that he was woken up by heavy banging at his door and that agents pointed weapons at him.


Guaido, 35, declared himself interim president on January 23 and has the backing of the United States and more than 50 other countries.

"Even now, Mr Marrero is being held against his will in an undisclosed location".

The Treasury Department announcement came while the President Donald Trump met with leaders from five Caribbean nations, where Venezuela was at the top of the agenda.

The United States this month withdrew all its diplomats from Venezuela.

"The aim is to squeeze Maduro and his allies in the military, as well as other connected, upper middle-class Venezuelans who have access to bank accounts and credit cards."


The vice president pointed out how the USA has responded to the ongoing situation in Venezuela by sanctioning government officials, blocking them from taking US dollars from its state-owned oil company PDVSA and providing more than 525 metric tons of food aid.
