Trump Again Bucked His Own Government's Actions on North Korea

Trump's tweet, which confused many, described the Treasury's sanctions, which he incorrectly said were announced Friday, as "large scale Sanctions" that were "added to those already existing Sanctions on North Korea". "I have today ordered the withdrawal of those additional Sanctions!" In addition to it being a stupefying decision for a president to immediately contradict his administration after a decision had been made, the tweet was factually mistaken in at least two respects: The sanctions were announced Thursday, not Friday.

But on Friday, the president said this.

The White House had said Thursday's sanctions were evidence the US was maintaining pressure on North Korea in an effort to coax its leader to give up his nuclear weapons program.

On Thursday, the Treasury Department announced that they would penalize two Chinese shipping companies accused of helping North Korea to get around sanctions.

President Donald Trump (R) and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un hold a meeting during the second US-North Korea summit at the Sofitel Legend Metropole hotel in Hanoi on February 28, 2019.

The Treasury Department just Thursday had announced the round of sanctions targeting two Chinese shipping companies that it said have helped North Korea evade sanctions.

The Treasury Department, in coordination with the State Department and the U.S. Coast Guard, also updated a North Korea shipping advisory, adding dozens of vessels thought to be doing ship-to-ship transfers with North Korean tankers or exported North Korean coal in violation of sanctions.

"Trump's cancelling out of sanctions might have been a bid to get North Korea to change its thinking", he said. The announcement came shortly after Trump's failed denuclearization summit with Kim Jong Un in Vietnam.

"Everyone should take notice and review their own activities to ensure they are not involved in North Korea's sanctions evasion", he said.

Sen. Mark Warner, the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said it's "amateur hour" at the Trump White House. Ltd. on Thursday for using what it described as "deceptive methods" to circumvent both U.S and global sanctions on North Korea.

The president's declaration sparked confusion because it was unclear which sanctions he wanted to roll back.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement that fully implementing the United Nations resolutions is key to getting Kim to give up his nuclear weapons program.
