Facebook says no one flagged NZ mosque shooting livestream

The company earlier revealed that it had removed 1.5 million videos of the attack worldwide in the 24 hours after the shootings, 1.2 million of which were blocked at upload. Of the 1.5 million videos of the massacre, filmed by a body-worn camera on the perpetrator nearly in the style of a video game, 1.2 million were blocked at upload.

"No users reported the video during the live broadcast".

"We have been working directly with the New Zealand Police to respond to the attack and support their investigation". "We did as much as we could to remove, or seek to have removed, some of the footage that was being circulated in the aftermath of this terrorist attack".

Facebook also doesn't appear to post any public information instructing law enforcement how to report unsafe or criminal video. The blackout will begin at 1:40 p.m. local time Friday, the same time the gunman started broadcasting live on Facebook last week.

"The form of distribution, the tools of organization, they are new", Ardern said.

"We can not simply sit back and accept that these platforms just exist and what is said is not the responsibility of the place where they are published", she said. "They are the publisher".

"If they can not handle the responsibility, then it's their fault for continuing to provide that service", said Mary Anne Franks, a law professor at the University of Miami.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said she wants to discuss live streaming with Facebook, and some of the country's firms are considering whether to pull advertising from social media. Before Facebook was alerted, a link to a copy of the video hosted on a file-sharing site was already posted on 8chan. This also shows how quickly the Facebook livestream of the Christchurch mosque shootings went viral and were being shared on the platform.

"We removed the personal accounts of the named suspect from Facebook and Instagram, and are actively identifying and removing any imposter accounts that surface", Sonderby said, noting that the original Facebook Live video has been hashed, meaning any visually similar content will be detected and removed automatically.

The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) was created in 2017 under pressure from governments in Europe and the United States after a spate of deadly attacks.

Facebook on Tuesday offered some statistics in its defense following criticism of its struggle to contain the spread of a livestream video of Friday's mass shooting in New Zealand. "This incident highlights the importance of industry cooperation regarding the range of terrorists and violent extremists operating online".

Echoing the words of Spark managing director Simon Moutter on Twitter over the weekend, Mouat said he found it really hard to believe that more couldn't be done to moderate the content on social media sites. Automatic filters are only likely to be able to catch exact copies of the video, the Wall Street Journal reports, so if the footage is slightly altered then human intervention is required to block it. Facebook initially allowed clips and images showing nonviolent scenes of Tarrant's video to stay up, but has since reversed course and is removing all of his footage.
