Christchurch gun store sold 4 weapons to suspect

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, was charged with one count of murder on Saturday.

The owner of Christchurch's "Gun City" store said it sold four guns and ammunition to the alleged mosque shooter through a "police-verified online mail order process".

Other gun owners argued for their rights to be unfettered, but agreed there was no need for military-style semi-automatic weapons in New Zealand.

A man places flowers at a memorial site for victims of the mosque shootings at the Botanic Gardens in Christchurch, New Zealand, March 18, 2019. "What we do know is that there are about 50,000 firearms imported into New Zealand every year and a large portion of that number are semi automatics".

The store "detected nothing extraordinary", about the buyer, he said.

Tarrant, a self-avowed white supremacist, spent his youth in Grafton but has traveled overseas extensively over the past decade and had lived in recent years in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Tipple's lawyer, Nicholas Taylor, said police refused the importation of AR15 rifles able to be purchased with a standard licence, arguing the rifles were "born as MSSAs". "Once you obtain a license you can purchase a lot of firearms and there is no record of how many firearms you actually own".

Australia banned semi-automatic weapons, launched a national gun amnesty in which tens of thousands of guns were handed in, and made it much tougher to own firearms.

Tightening New Zealand's gun laws is at the top of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's agenda as she meets with her cabinet on Monday for the first time since the mass shooting in Christchurch that killed dozens of Muslim worshippers.

"What they've been doing does come with a cost, it does come with consequences because really they've been playing games with our lives", she said.

There are an estimated 1.5 million firearms in New Zealand, which has a population of only 5 million, but it has had low levels of gun violence. A Washington Post search of keywords related to the event, such as "New Zealand", surfaced a long list of videos, many of which were lengthy and uncensored views of the massacre.

Arden vowed to toughen the country's gun laws and said her cabinet will discuss changing gun laws Monday.

"It did not include a location; it did not include specific details", she said.

"In the first 24 hours we removed 1.5m videos of the attack globally, of which over 1.2m were blocked at upload" Facebook said in a tweet on Saturday night. Last year, such weapons re-entered public debate: similar to the conflict over bump stocks in America, police in New Zealand pushed for tighter regulations of aftermarket accessories and high-capacity magazines that can turn guns into semi-automatic assault weapons.

Bush said the man was apprehended 36 minutes after police were alerted. He said there would be no burials on Monday.

Mo, a volunteer who had flown in from Brisbane to wash the bodies, said the people who died in the mosques were classified as martyrs.

Bush said forensic officers and pathologists had been working around the clock to gather the evidence from the bodies needed. "But it is at the discretion of the family", said Mo.

"They are well and truly looking at this threat, they are dealing with the threat and to think that they've just discovered it or they are coming late to the party is complete rubbish", he said.

A massacre at two mosques on Friday has left 50 dead and another 50 hurt.

"Through all of this we try to remember that what we are bringing back to this tragedy, this horror, is a sense of compassion", Rehanna Ali, coordinator of women's affairs' at the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand, told a news conference.
