World reacts with disgust at New Zealand mosque attacks

The racist attack was reportedly "carefully planned".

Police took three men and a woman into custody after the shootings, which shocked people across the nation of 5 million people. Police successfully disabled one device, and authorities are still working on the other.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the twin shooting - the worst in her country's history - as a terror attack. Most of those who were at the mosques at the time of the shooting were migrants and refugees.

"The horrific terrorist attack in Christchurch targeted peacefully praying Muslims - if people are murdered exclusively due to their religion, that is an attack on all of us", he said. They later announced one man, aged in his late 20s, had been charged with murder and would appear in court on Saturday.

A second man said he quickly realised the seriousness of the incident when he saw people covered in blood.

Morrison said the gunman was a right-wing "terrorist" with Australian citizenship. But a man (pictured above) who claimed responsibility for the shootings left a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto in which he explained who he was and his reasoning for his actions.

In the document, he explicitly stated who he was and his justification for the shooting.

One of the weapons used in the Christchurch massacres was reportedly engraved with the name of Luca Traini, an Italian far-right militant who was jailed for racist shootings a year ago. "Pray for Christchurch, pray for New Zealand and pray for God's peace over the situation". He said he was not a member of any organization, but had donated to and interacted with many nationalist groups, though he acted alone and no group ordered the attack.

As the shooting unfolds, a person can be heard saying, "There wasn't even time to aim there was so many targets". I know that the people of New Zealand will never allow hate and division to triumph over these things they hold dear.

"These are people who I would describe as having extremist views that have absolutely no place in New Zealand and no place in the world", New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinta Ardern said.

Forty-one people were killed at the Al Noor mosque, seven at a mosque in the Linwood neighbourhood and one died in hospital, police said. "It's very grave, it's very serious", he told reporters.

Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yusuf called on the New Zealand government to investigate "the root cause of such terrorism and hand a hefty punishment to the attackers". "It's unbelievably nutty. I don't understand how anyone could do this to these people, to anyone. There were three in the hallway, at the door leading into the mosque, and people inside the mosque".

A gunman broadcast live footage on Facebook of the attack on one of the mosques, showing him driving to the scene, entering the building and shooting people at random.

One man who said he was at the Al Noor mosque told media the gunman was white, blond and wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest.

In the video that was apparently livestreamed, the gunman spends more than two minutes inside the mosque spraying terrified worshippers with bullets again and again, sometimes firing at people he has already cut down.

An injured person is loaded into an ambulance following a shooting at the Al Noor mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, March 15, 2019. Children's screams can be heard in the distance as he returns to his vehicle to get another rifle. Nichols said he saw two wounded people being carried out on stretchers past his automotive shop.
