Hamas says agreement to restore calm with Israel

Explosions were heard in the Gaza Strip early Friday and Palestinian witnesses said Israeli planes bombed two Hamas security positions. Four people were wounded, health ministry officials said.

This is the first time that rockets from Gaza Strip were fired toward Tel Avi, Israeli financial center of Israel, since a major conflict in 2014.

According to the IDF statement, Hamas' headquarters located in central Gaza Strip which was responsible for guiding "terror activities" in the West Bank was struck.

Not only is Egypt in the midst of another effort to achieve a long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, but Israel is just weeks away from a general election. The assessment indicated that Hamas had no intention of escalating violence with Israel.

In the aftermath of that episode, dozens of Israeli air strikes killed seven Palestinians, at least five of them gunmen, and destroyed several buildings.

The attacks were taking place in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis, about 25km south of Gaza City.

Both Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs Gaza, and its ally Islamic Jihad denied they were behind the rocket fire toward Tel Aviv, raising the possibility they were launched by fringe groups.

Israeli soldiers are seen on top of an armoured personnel carrier (APC) near the border between Israel and Gaza on its Israeli side, March 15, 2019.

There were no reports of damage or casualties, the Israeli army said, and no group in Gaza immediately claimed the attack. The Israelis retaliated in the early hours of Friday.

Israeli media are citing an Israeli defence official as saying that the rockets may have been launched "by mistake" while maintenance work was being carried out.

"We call on our people to commemorate Earth Day and to provide the biggest support for the Return March demonstrations", said the National Commission for the Great March of Return in a statement on Friday, referring to the environmental event also held on 30 March.

His right-wing rival, Naftali Bennett, demanded that Israel resume its killings of Hamas chiefs.

The protests have frequently degenerated into mass riots along the fence, throwing rocks, fire bombs and hand-grenades at Israeli troops, burning tires and trying to breach the security fence.

Israel withdrew its troops and settlers from the packed, narrow enclave in 2005 but maintains tight control of its land and sea borders. The Egyptians left Gaza late Thursday.

Gaza has for almost a year been the scene of massive protests and clashes between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers along its demarcation line with the Jewish state.

The usual suspects - Hamas, the Popular Resistance Committees and the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad - each denied their respective terror groups were behind the projectile attacks.

It was the first time the city had been targeted since a 2014 war between Israel and Gaza militants.
