Beto O'Rourke's presidential ambitions get reality check from Ellen K.

Beto O'Rourke told local news outlet KTSM Wednesday that he is running for president, and he will formally announce on Thursday.

O'Rourke didn't just focus his campaigning on urban and suburban areas typically rich with Democratic voters - he traveled to all 254 Texas counties, committing to visit even the reddest, most rural places.

O'Rourke narrowly lost a senate campaign to Sen.

"This is a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us", O'Rourke said seated alongside his wife Amy.

"Perhaps most importantly of all, because our very existence depends on it, we can unleash the ingenuity and creativity of millions of Americans who want to ensure that we squarely confront the challenge of climate change before it's too late", O'Rourke said.

The former Texas congressman said at a campaign event in Iowa Thursday that as marijuana use has increased, tobacco use has "plummeted" in the last 40 years as it has been treated as a public health issue and marketed as "not cool".

At the end of the month, on March 30, O'Rourke plans to return to El Paso to kick off his campaign.

The White House run will also prompt greater scrutiny of his policy proposals and track record in Congress.

O'Rourke had mulled a presidential run for months and took an unusual break for what appeared to be some soul-searching after his loss, taking a road trip to New Mexico, Kansas and elsewhere.

The nominating process will test whether O'Rourke can translate that kind of support and star power to a different kind of campaign, one in which he'll be competing against other popular Democrats, not an opponent like Republican Sen. "It's a big part of why I'm running".

Also teasing at a 2020 presidential campaign is former Vice President Joe Biden, who met with former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams on Thursday.

'You can probably tell that I want to run, ' he says. O'Rourke accused Trump of stoking "false fear" about immigrants. "I've never seen so much hand movement".
