Malaysia drops murder charge against Indonesian woman in Kim Jong Nam case

She was arrested by Malaysian authorities in connection with the murder of Kim Chol (Kim Jong Nam), 45, at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 departure hall on Feb 13, 2017.

Indonesia's Siti Aisyah was accused in the killing, which involved the smearing of VX nerve agent on the face of the North Korean leader's half-brother, Kim Jong Nam, while he was walking in an airport terminal in Kuala Lumpur on February 13, 2017.

The High Court judge discharged Aisyah without an acquittal after prosecutors applied to drop the murder charge against her.

The prosecutors did not ask the judge to drop charges against Huong, a decision her lawyer criticized as "unfair".

Siti Aisyah, from Serang, Banten, looked cheerful and thanked all parties involved in her release.

He said Aisyah was free to leave the country.

While the court discharged Siti Aisyah from the case, it rejected her lawyer's request for her to be fully acquitted, as it said that the trial had already established a prima facie case and she could be recalled it fresh evidence emerges.

Gooi Soon Seng, Siti Aisyah's lawyer, said his client was "a scapegoat".

Siti Aisyah, who had worked as a masseuse at a hotel in the Malaysian capital, and Huong, who described herself as an actress, had maintained that they believed they had been hired to participate in a reality TV prank show.

But speaking to reporters through an interpreter in court, Huong said she felt "terrible" about her own position. "This is my day of freedom".

Indonesian Siti Aisyah flew to Jakarta on a special aircraft arranged by the Indonesian embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Indonesian Ambassador Rusdi Kirana said he was thankful to the Malaysian government.

Doan's murder trial was suspended following Monday's surprise turn of events.

"There has been a long process to free her... since she was detained", Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir told reporters in Jakarta. She said that she was well treated in prison and received plenty of encouragement, but that she was eager to meet her family again. Vietnam has pushed less hard, and recently hosted Kim Jong Un for an official visit and a summit with President Donald Trump.

Siti Aisyah smiles as she leaves the Shah Alam Court, on March 11, 2019. "We are making representation to the attorney general for Doan to be taken equally ... there must be justice". The defence phase of the trial had been scheduled to start in January but was delayed until Monday.

Lawyers for the women have previously said they were pawns in a political assassination with clear links to the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur, and that the prosecution failed to show the women had any intention to kill.

Murder charges dropped against one woman connected to death of Kim Jong Un's half brother.

Kim Jong Nam had lived in exile in Macau for several years before the killing, having fled his homeland after his half-brother became North Korea's leader in 2011 following their father's death.

Last year, the prosecution made a motion to throw out the case; at the time, the judge ruled that both Siti and Duon should testify, not ruling out that the entire incident could have been a conspiracy between the women and their North Korean counterparts to assassinate the leader's older brother.
