SpaceX rocket with unmanned USA capsule blasts off for space station

The white Dragon capsule, developed by Elon Musk's SpaceX company under contract to NASA, closed in on the orbiting station almost 260 miles above the Pacific Ocean and, flying autonomously, linked up on its own, without the help of the robotic arm normally used to guide spacecraft into position. All the things went just about completely, and now it's clear that SpaceX is within the lead and forward of competitor Boeing within the race to offer NASA with the means to ship astronauts into area each time it needs. "This first launch of a space system designed for humans, and built and operated by a commercial company through a public-private partnership, is a revolutionary step on our path to get humans to the Moon, Mars and beyond".

"Crew Dragon" was launched on March 2nd and is an unmanned mission that will be transporting 400 pounds of "supplies and equipment to the Space Station".

The Crew Dragon craft launching from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida bound for the International Space Station.

After the capsule docked with the ISS, the astronauts were able to board the spacecraft. After 11 minutes of launch, the vehicle separated from the rocket.

A SpaceX rocket with an unmanned crew capsule blasted off on Saturday for the International Space Station, in a key milestone for Elon Musk's space company and NASA's long-delayed goal to resume human spaceflight from USA soil later this year.

The weekend was a big one for space fans and enthusiasts in the US.

In the future, cosmonauts and astronauts will be able to fly aboard both Russia's Soyuz and U.S. spacecraft.

Several lasers and software helped dragon capsule to scan docking adapter, and it attached itself.

The next stage of the mission also went without a hitch when astronauts on the ISS opened the hatch to the spacecraft.

SpaceX tested their systems even as they prepared to dock, moving in close and then backing up again to prove their reliability.

"It was super exciting to see it", astronaut Bob Behnken, told the BBC.

Next up, though, is Boeing, which is looking to launch its Starliner capsule without a crew as early as April and with a crew possibly in August.
