Rashida Tlaib plans resolution calling for Trump impeachment

The probe was taken over by Mueller.

A day after Democrats won control of the House, the president warned he would create gridlock in Washington by going to a "war-like posture" if he determined their probes of his 2016 campaign, businesses and presidency were going too far.

Democrats in the House are opening investigations into Trump, his family business and other matters. All have since left the White House.

Eighty-one people, agencies and organisations were named by the committee as recipients of document requests, including Mr Trump's adult sons, Donald Jr and Eric, as well as his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is Ivanka's husband and a White House adviser. Democrats are also planning to request the president's tax returns formally in two weeks, Politico reported.

Trump himself swatted away the probe as a "political hoax", but said he would cooperate.

Tlaib said during her news conference, "It's really important that the President of the United States is investigated in violations of the United States Constitution", highlighting, in particular, the emoluments clause, prohibiting gifts or benefits from foreign governments.

Nadler stressed that "impeachment is a long way down the road" but he said the Committee will move with the probe quickly to provide Americans with facts and transparency. "You have to persuade enough of the opposition party voters, [the] Trump voters, that you're not just trying ... to reverse the results of the last election". The statement accused Democrats of running a fishing expedition.

"Contrary to what Nadler and company claim, none of this is about exercising their constitutional right to oversight of the executive branch", Ingraham said. "Doing anything else will only hurt the Democrats in 2020 and beyond", he wrote.

"He urged House Democrats to wait for Mueller's investigation to conclude and to proceed with impeachment "only if" there is a "'smoking gun' that shows clear, unabashed, impeachable behavior or collusion". There was no sugar-coating Cohen's description of Trump as a person who is selfish, amoral and dishonest to the core - a person who is truly unfit to be president of the United States. He said there would be more requests, which might involve additional people. Cohen and prosecutors say he made the payments at the direction of Trump, raising the question of whether the president could be entangled in the case.

According to a Monmouth University Poll conducted after former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen testified before Congress, 42% of Americans back impeachment and removal, an increase from 36% who felt the same way in the previous poll. His three-year prison sentence will begin in May. The Oversight and Reform Committee has launched multiple investigations into all facets of the administration. Jordan is the ranking Republican on that committee. "And they've never stopped".

Cohen, who delivered explosive public testimony last week before a different House committee calling Trump a "racist", "conman" and "cheat", arrived for his testimony carrying a brown file folder and wheeling a black suitcase. He also appeared before the panel last week behind closed doors.

In addition to the NRA, Nadler also sought documents from the White House, the Trump Organisation, Trump's charity, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Cambridge Analytica - a data company that worked with the Trump campaign and has been investigated by Congress in connection with Russia's election interference efforts.
