Cohen Knows What Trump Is Capable Of. His Testimony Should Terrify Us

Michael Cohen, US President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, is sworn in to testify before the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

"Michael Cohen was one of many lawyers who represented me (unfortunately)", Trump tweeted ahead of the hearing from Hanoi, where he was enmeshed in a second nuclear summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Cohen also said that he is aware of other wrongdoing by Trump that is under investigation by the SDNY.

According to Fox News, the letter says that Cohen's testimony "was a spectacular and brazen attempt to knowing and willfully testify falsely and fictitiously to numerous material facts", that were "designed to make himself look better on a national stage".

Cohen has already met seven times with Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller's prosecutors as part of the investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation in the 2016 election.

The panel has been probing Russian election meddling and any collusion with the Trump campaign.

"The President of the United States thus wrote a check for the payment of hush money as part of a criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws", Cohen testified.

Later, after the payment to Daniels became public, Cohen said Trump called him in February 2018 and asked him to lie about it.

"I'm responsible for your silliness because I did the same thing that you're doing now for 10 years", Cohen told Republican members of Congress who sought to impugn his credibility.

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, presides over the last hour of testimony by Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Feb. 27, 2019.

Cohen said that Donald Trump, to his knowledge, had not fathered a secret non-marital child.

Trump lowballed the value of his assets for tax purposes while inflating them for other audiences, Cohen testified, brandishing three years worth of skeletal financial summaries from 2011, 2012 and 2013 that he said has been given to banks and journalists.

Cohen also suggested federal prosecutors in NY are investigating some unspecified crime involving Trump.

"I think having a fake hearing like that and having it in the middle of this very important summit is really a bad thing", he said. He said Trump inflated his net worth to try to secure loans and to boost his status. Mr. Trump directed me to find a straw bidder to purchase a portrait of him that was being auctioned at an Art Hamptons Event.

He said Trump did not ask him directly to lie to Congress, specifying that's not the president's style.

"The good news is on the underlying campaign finance charge, that the payments to Stormy Daniels were a campaign finance violation", Mr Christie told 7.30.

Mr Cohen told lawmakers Mr Trump is a racist. "I think they're afraid you're going to tell the truth".

In July 2016, days before the Democratic convention, I was in Mr. Trump's office when his secretary announced that [Republican strategist] Roger Stone was on the phone.

Cohen displayed a copy of a $35,000 check written to him on Trump's account, signed by Trump and dated August 1, 2017, while Trump was president.

"Certainly it's the first time a convicted perjurer has been brought back to be a star witness in a hearing", Republican Representative Jim Jordan told Cohen, deriding him as a "cheat" and a "fraudster" who is about to go to prison.

When I [describe Trump as a] conman, I'm talking about a man who declares himself brilliant but directed me to threaten his high school, his colleges, and the College Board to never release his grades or SAT scores.

Patton, who serves as an official at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, did not speak at the hearing but had a statement entered on record.
