Porsche confirms Macan will go all-electric, production to follow Taycan, Cross Turismo

Porsche has said that it wants 50 percent of its new cars to have "an electric drive system" by 2025, and an electric Macan will be a big factor in achieving that.

Part of Porsche's massive EV spend-up includes investment in the company's Leipzig plant to allow it to produce PPE-based electric vehicles on its existing production line and the company says that the decision to manufacture the next generation of the Macan at the its Leipzig site was taken as early as the beginning of July a year ago.

"Electromobility and Porsche go together perfectly; not just because they share a high-efficiency approach, but especially due to their sporty character", CEO Oliver Blume said. One of the newest entries to the EV world will be the next-gen Porsche Macan, which will be entirely electric and contend with cars like the BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz EQC and Audi e-tron. It'll also come with 800V tech.

It will share its platform with its sibling luxury brand, Audi.

The Macan has been a huge success for Porsche and is now the company's best-selling model.

Production of the electric Macan is expected to begin in the next few years, at the same plant in Leipzig, Germany, where the current petrol-engine version is made.

"Green" will soon apply to more than just the Macan's paint. Using a 350-kilowatt charge point, Porsche has hinted that 62 miles could be added in just 4 minutes and close to 250 miles in less than 20 minutes.

Porsche's parent Volkswagen has also committed to an ambitious electrification ramp-up, earmarking €30bn (£26bn, $34bn) for electrification in the next five years.

The next Macan will likely be the third EV from Porsche following on from the Taycan liftback sedan due later this year and the Taycan Cross Turismo soft-roader due in 2020. But instead of waiting to see what competitors are going to do, Porsche realized being a segment leader is the smartest way to go.
