"Fashion people are fashion, they are not politics", Lagerfeld added. For every celebrated collection, Lagerfeld's history is littered with just as many highly publicized quotes - often generously described as "controversial" - that were misogynistic, racist and just plain cruel.

Despite his acclaimed success in the high-fashion industry, Lagerfeld worked as well with commercial brands such as H&M, for which he signed a limited edition collection in 2001 that sold out in two days.

As German news agency Deutsche Welle (DW) reported last year, Lagerfeld said he did not know the year of his birth as his birth certificate was destroyed in the bombing of his native Hamburg during World War II. That relationship lasted more than 50 years.

But a Chanel spokeswoman later told AFP the designer was not able to attend that show either. Our thoughts are with his family during this hard time.

Lagerfeld, who moonlighted as a cartoonist in Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, took a dig at Chancellor Angela Merkel's pro-refugee stance in a 2017 sketch that blamed her for helping a far-right party gain parliamentary seats. We owe him a great deal: "his taste and talent were the most exceptional I have ever known", Bernard Arnault, the chairman and CEO of LVMH, said in a statement.

"I'm rather pro-prostitution. I admire people who do it". For days before each show, Lagerfeld would review the proposed looks of his collection and determine how the bags, shoes, hats, broaches, and pearls would be worn with each one, all while greeting a rotating cast of journalists, the courtiers to the couturier. Among the most acid comments included calling former French President Francois Hollande an "imbecile" who would be "disastrous" for France in Marie- Claire, and telling The Sun British tabloid that he didn't like the face of Pippa Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge's sister.

Chanel chief executive Alain Wertheimer recalled how he had given carte blanche to Lagerfeld in the 1980s to reinvent the brand, from the Chanel jacket to its tweeds and two-tone shoes.

Even when it comes to her methods of working, she has been reluctant to be seen centre stage. I feel so lucky to have been in your presence. Our hierarchy isn't felt throughout the studio, it's seamless.

ON EGO: "I'm not obsessed with my name, I'm obsessed with the look".
