Bernie Sanders Says He's 'Not Crazy About Getting Rid Of The Filibuster'

If successful in becoming the Democratic presidential candidate, Mr Sanders would likely challenge incumbent Donald Trump.

"I can tell you very happily, and I think any objective observer would confirm what I'm saying, is that in the last year and half or so, the Democratic party has moved in a far more progressive direction than they were before I ran for president", he said in an interview with CNN last year. "Well, I don't think we should succumb to that kind of blackmail". "I also think he is a racist, a sexist, a homophobe, a xenophobe, somebody who is gaining cheap political points by trying to pick on minorities, often undocumented immigrants".

"Our campaign is not only about defeating Donald Trump", he added in an email to supporters.

Indeed, Sanders' most recent Medicare-for-all bill was cosponsored by fellow presidential candidates Sens. He said he would push for universal healthcare, raise the minimum wage and provide free public college tuition.

"Our campaign is about creating a government and economy that works for the many, not just the few", Sanders said.

He enters the race in a stronger position than in 2016 when he lost the nomination to Clinton, who the Democratic National Committee secretly supported, as was later revealed in leaked documents. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NY), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Obama-era HUD Secretary Julian Castro. His current geriatric possible rival for the nomination is former DE senator and Democrat vice president Joe Biden, who was born in 1942.

Sanders gave an outline Tuesday of how he will campaign.

But he will face off against several other Democratic candidates who also want to appeal to the party's base.

This time around, the senator will attempt to prove he can be more than a foil to an establishment-backed frontrunner, running against a deep and diverse field of rivals who have excited a new generation of Democratic voters.

Speaking on Vermont Public Radio, Sanders said: "Three years ago, during our 2016 campaign, when we brought forth our progressive agenda we were told that our ideas were "radical" and 'extreme'".

Donald Trump won the election and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a young congresswoman from NY, is a rising Democratic star, embracing numerous positions held by Mr Sanders.

Sanders garnered more than 13 million primary votes and carried 23 states during the Democratic primaries by energizing a movement of young voters with his fiery populist rhetoric.

Sanders was a former mayor of Burlington in Vermont.

If successful, Sanders, 77, would also be the oldest nominee ever put forward by a major political party.

"If you look at polling in this country", said Sanders, "what you find is that a whole lot of people are dissatisfied with both the Democratic and Republican parties, and more and more people are seeing themselves as independents". Sanders also had to clarify comments about the role of racism in the 2018 campaign, addressing the losses of gubernatorial candidates Andrew Gillum in Florida and Stacey Abrams in Georgia.
