Venezuela to distribute food to poor Colombians amid aid tension

"We are going to take more than 20,000 boxes of (food) to the brothers and sisters of Cucuta to help with the situation of extreme need facing the boys and girls of Cucuta", Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez said in televised statements. Mr. Trump has used Venezuela as an example of what, in the administration's view, happens when a country turns to socialism.

Guaido wrote on Twitter the lawmakers had been "deported by an isolated and increasingly irrational regime".

Around 50 countries, including some 30 European ones, have recognized the interim presidency of Guaido.

He was visiting Colombian border city of Cucuta, where humanitarian aid is being stockpiled for planned delivery to Venezuela.

He did not explicitly say the food would be distributed in Cucuta. "Food and medicine will reach the people of Venezuela".

Tensions have further escalated ahead of 23 February, when USA "humanitarian aid", which is now stockpiled in Columbia, is expected to reach Venezuela.

Maduro, who has the backing of Russian Federation and China, has told the military, which remains loyal to him, not to let any convoys of aid cross into Venezuela.

Yorger Maita, a helper from the aid group Rescate Venezuela, said that if foreign aid doesn't enter "other people will continue to die".

President Nicolas Maduro denies there's a humanitarian crisis, saying the relief is a cover for a usa invasion - and his troops will not let it through.

"Venezuela is preparing for the humanitarian avalanche", Mr Guaido told about 4,000 supporters clad in white T-shirts and green scarves who gathered Saturday to sign up as volunteers.

"And we're hoping that sense prevails and that the military allows the bridge to be open so that much-needed supplies can be sent across".

"Whoever prevents the entry of humanitarian aid is condemned to spend the rest of their lives fleeing global justice, because that is an worldwide crime", Mr Rubio said in Spanish.

Guaido said thousands of Venezuelans have volunteered to meet on February 23 to escort the aid through barricades constructed on an unused bridge that connects the two nations.

Mr Maduro has dismissed the humanitarian assistance as "crumbs" and "rotten and contaminated food" while blaming shortages of food and medicine on United States sanctions.
