Lavalin: Federal minister Jody Wilson-Raybould resigns amid allegations

The scandal is now being looked at by Federal Ethics Commissioner, Mario Dion.

Ms. Wilson-Raybould shared her resignation letter to the Prime Minister's Office on the platform.

Yet three years later she was unceremoniously demoted, shuffled off to Veteran's Affairs.

As it's written the motion indicates the study would start before the end of the month, and would include testimony from: Justice Minister David Lametti; Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Gerald Butts; Senior Advisors Elder Marques and Mathieu Bouchard; and Wilson-Raybould's chief of staff Jessica Prince.

Moving still further westward to British Columbia, Infrastructure Minister François-Philippe Champagne hosts a roundtable chat with the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce before heading out to tour various community projects across southwestern BC, while Transport Minister Marc Garneau is in Richmond to reveal the "most recent recipients of abandoned boats funding" during a stop at Steveston Harbour.

The prime minister defended his government's record on reconciliation in a warehouse of buses Tuesday after Indigenous leaders accused him of throwing one of his former ministers under one.

- In 2018, the company entered into a compliance agreement over illegal donations to political parties in Canada. He said Wilson-Raybould never spoke to him.

Federal byelections will be held on February 25 in three vacant ridings - Burnaby South, where NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is hoping to win a seat in the House of Commons, the Ontario riding of York-Simcoe and Montreal's Outremont.

Monday, he said in Vancouver that he'd told Wilson-Raybould that any decision on the subject was hers alone.

The pressure to go easy on SNC-Lavalin may have resulted in the termination of Jody Wilson Raybould as Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the first Indigenous woman to ever hold the post.

The whole Wilson-Raybould affair has had a bad odour to it right from the moment Trudeau announced that she was being shuffled from attorney general's portfolio to veteran's affairs, a move which was seen as a demotion.

Does that mean the Liberals will allow the committee to hear from Wilson-Raybould?

The allegation in the Globe story is that Trudeau's officials pressured Wilson-Raybould a year ago to make use of the power the law gave her and allow SNC-Lavalin to negotiate a plea bargain.

"I will highlight however that there's a real danger, and it's been flagged for me, of unintended consequences, particularly because there are two court cases ongoing directly related to this matter that could be impacted by such a decision we might make".

Her resignation provides stark contrast to Trudeau's characterization of the situation just a day earlier.

In a similar fashion, the Director of Public Prosecutions Act gives the attorney general, a politician, the power to override the decisions of federal prosecutors.

Conservative Leader Albert Scheer has led the charge to haul Trudeau's aides and top members of his party in front of an emergency meeting of the justice committee for what he calls "unprecedented" attempts at influencing a criminal proceeding.

Liberal MP and committee chair Anthony Housefather has indicated that he will likely support an investigation.

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief Garrison Settee offered a more pointed rebuke, equating the government's treatment of Wilson-Raybould to "character assassination".
