On Saturday, AMC released the first photos from Season 5 of the Walking Dead spin-off series, featuring a fresh look at Dwight.

Joining Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan, now it is learned Danai Gurira is leaving The Walking Dead.

Per the shocking development, Gurira will return as the katana-wielding Michonne for Season 10 in just a few episodes that will be dispersed throughout the season.

The Walking Dead actress, who has played badass zombie killer Michonne since Season 3, reportedly plans to exit the AMC drama.

The Walking Dead returns for the second half of Season 9 on Sunday.

Danai Gurira's machete-wielding days are nearly over. The announcement of her departure strikes another massive blow to the hit series after Andrew Lincoln left late past year.

Considering Michonne became largely the show's central character in the wake of Rick's departure, and as a major player in the original comics, it'll be a massive challenge for the show to continues beyond season 10. We love Danai; we love that character. "But we certainly would want her on the show as long as she wants to be on it", Madden said. Obviously, the lesson of Andy is that the show can survive anybody's departure if need be but that's not our goal. It's imagined that Gurira will spend more time on Broadway, writing and starring in projects, in addition to her continued work on The Walking Dead and future big screen projects.

Gurira's MCU character Okoye, the captain of the Dorae Milaje, the Wakandan Royal Guard, fought alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War and will likely play a key role in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame.
