In his second State of the Union address on Tuesday (February 5), Donald Trump told listeners that the United States would be in a major war with North Korea if he wasn't elected.

Trump has said that his outreach to Kim and their first meeting last June in Singapore opened a path to peace. "Our hostages have come home, nuclear testing has stopped, and there has not been a missile launch in 15 months", he said.

Despite the achievements Trump listed regarding the relationship between North Korea and the United States - two countries technically at war since 1950 - the president emphasized that "much work remains to be done", particularly on at the highest levels of both governments. He added that his "relationship with Kim Jong Un is a good one".

Trump said he would meet the elusive young leader on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam, although he did not specify the venue.

The two leaders met for a historic summit in Singapore last June, where they signed a vague agreement that said North Korea would start working toward "complete denuclearization".

Trump went on to confirm the date and location for his next summit with Kim Jong Un.

As US-North Korea talks were revived in January following slow progress since their Singapore summit, concessions from the two sides that will bring denuclearization negotiations to the next level have been drawing keen attention from the worldwide community.

Commenters on one site said Kim could even take inspiration from the country's north and south reunifying after the war.

USA envoy Stephen Biegun is due to meet his North Korean counterpart Kim Hyok Chol on Pyongyang on Wednesday, as he attempts to push forward preparations for the summit and advance a plan to reinvigorate talks about denuclearization.

"Vietnam hosts students from North Korea who research Vietnam's economic model and in 2010, Vietnam hosted confidential talks between North Korea and Japan on family reunions", Vietnam expert Thayer said.

For North Korea, Vietnam is a comrade who has supported the country in war and at global forums.

A source at Danang airport said four USA military V-22 "Osprey" aircraft flew from Japan's Okinawa island and landed in the coastal city on Tuesday evening.

During a surprise visit to Iraq late a year ago, Trump made clear that he has "no plans at all" to remove U.S. troops from the Middle Eastern country, stressing his interest in wanting more soldiers deployed there from Syria.

CIA Director Gina Haspel told senators that "of course the regime is committed to developing a long-range nuclear armed missile that would pose a direct threat to the United States".

US intelligence chiefs believe there is little likelihood Kim will voluntarily give up his nuclear weapons or missiles capable of carrying them. "It is worth noting that Trump's decision to talk directly to Kim Jong Un has marked a dramatic turn in North Korea's attitude".

The three-year Korean War ended with an armistice that left the two Koreas technically still at war.

In an interview with CBS News on Sunday, President Donald Trump specifically signalled his readiness to keep USA troops in Iraq in order to monitor Iran.

Trump has largely downplayed such reports.
