Stacey Abrams to deliver Dem response to SOTU

Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams will deliver her party's response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address next week.

And House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she was thrilled Abrams had accepted, saying that in the 2018 campaign her "electrifying message reinvigorated our nation & continues to inspire millions in every part of the country".

The news of Abrams' response comes a day after Trump accepted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's invitation to deliver his State of the Union speech on February 5, a week later than originally scheduled because of the partial government shutdown.

"She is just a great spokesperson. She is a dynamic, moral leader; she delivered results on the issues that matter most to Americans; and she tirelessly pursues fairness and justice for everyone in her state".

Abrams has started a voting-rights advocacy group but is also considering her own political future and looking to help other Democrats.

While she refused to call it a concession speech, Abrams ultimately admitted to her supporters that "the law now allows me no further viable remedy" to fight the results. David Perdue, who has emerged as one of Trump's most outspoken allies on Capitol Hill.

Abrams narrowly lost her gubernatorial race in Georgia this November to Republican Brian Kemp.

Following Ms Abrams' remarks, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra will deliver the Democratic response in Spanish.

The New York Democrat extended the invitation to Abrams when the two met in Washington earlier this month.

The former candidate catapulted to national attention during her battle for Georgia's governor's mansion.

Pelosi initially invited Trump to deliver the speech on January 29 - but later suggested he postpone the address until the shutdown ended or deliver it in writing. Abrams held firm that Kemp was impeding the voting rights of African-American individuals in the state. Abrams eventually conceded, but blasted Kemp, who was secretary of state, for how he handled the election and said he pushed suppressed voter suppression efforts.

He said he called her three weeks ago to ask her.

After the president gives his State of the Union speech, the opposition party gets a chance to respond.

Abrams' campaign in Georgia attracted national buzz with celebrities like Oprah Winfrey coming to the state to campaign on her behalf.
