Florida's New Secretary of State Resigns After Blackface Photos Emerge

Back in 2005, Ertel attended a private Halloween party, in which he made a decision to dress in blackface.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis accepted the resignation of Secretary of State Michael Ertel, who stepped down after photos of him in blackface surfaced.

He received numerous awards within Florida for increasing voter registration.

After receiving the photos from the Tallahassee Democrat, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a statement on Thursday saying he had accepted Ertel's resignation.

Florida Secretary of State Michael Ertel resigned Thursday after photos emerged of him wearing blackface as a Hurricane "Katrina victim" at a Halloween party in 2005. Ertel confirmed to the newspaper that he was the man in the photos.

They were reportedly captured in 2005, just months after Hurricane Katrina ransacked New Orleans, causing almost 2,000 deaths.

His biography on the Florida Department of State website has already been pulled down.

In its response, the governor's office enclosed a copy of a two-sentence resignation email that Ertel apparently sent to DeSantis at 1:59 p.m.

The photos were taken while Ertel was serving as Seminole County's supervisor of elections.

In an appearance at a Panhandle news conference, DeSantis said he thought the controversy was "unfortunate" and that Ertel regretted the incident.

"This is not the Mike Ertel I know, but clearly the optics are bad, and he had no choice but to resign", Seminole County Commissioner Lee Constantine told News 6.

Florida Secretary of State Michael Ertel wasn't on the job long before he chose to resign from his position.

"There's nothing I can say", he told the newspaper.

Democratic opponent Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who was seeking to become Florida's first black governor, questioned DeSantis' association with people seen as racially divisive. "While Ertel has resigned, we will be watching closely to ensure that Gov. DeSantis makes a future appointment that better reflects the growing diversity of the state and one that can help restore public confidence in this most important role". "He just ran darn good elections", Plakon said.
