Cuomo Signs Historic Abortion Law, Celebrates By Turning Empire State Building Pink

Governor Cuomo has now signed the controversial "Reproductive Health Act" into law which extends abortion rights for New York State women.

"We must continue taking action against state legislation that chips away access to safe and legal abortion for women", said Amy Weintraub, Reproductive Rights Program Director at Progress Florida.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Columbia Student Health Insurance does not cover abortion fees, while in fact the most comprehensive option of the insurance plan covers full abortion costs.

One World Trade Center lit pink on January 22, 2019 to celebrate the passage of the Reproductive Health Act on the anniversary of Roe V. Wade.

Governor Andrew Cuomo signing into law the Reproductive Health Act, strengthening abortion rights in New York State Tuesday. Some opponents also predicted the bill will lead to more late-term abortions.

NY state has enacted strong new legal protections for abortion rights.

Pritzker's predecessor, former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, drew the ire of his party base for signing into law a bill forcing taxpayers to fund elective abortions.

The bill's passage is a major victory for abortion rights advocates, having been stalled since its 2006 introduction because of the then GOP-dominated Senate. The New York State Assembly has kept the torch lit for years, and we are extremely excited to be able to pass the torch to a Senate dedicated to the respect of women and the protection of their basic right to make healthcare decisions.

Previously New York did not allow women to have abortions after 24 weeks unless their life was in danger; doctors faced up to seven years in prison for performing third-trimester abortions otherwise. NY as a state legalized abortion in 1970. It takes abortion out of the criminal code and puts it where women's health belongs - in the public health law.

The law would ban abortions once a baby's heartbeat is detected, which can happen as early as six weeks into gestation. Some critics argued the bill could make it harder for prosecutors to bring charges when a woman is assaulted and loses her pregnancy, the AP reports, although Democrats disputed that.

To emphasize his support for abortion rights, Cuomo presented Sarah Ragle Weddington-who defended the original Roe case-with a New York Public Service Award.

"We're saying here in NY, women's lives matter".
