Venezuela says opposition party linked to failed military revolt

National Assembly president Juan Guaido, who has engaged Maduro in a power struggle since being elected to lead the legislature earlier this month, spoke out in support of the mutinous soldiers.

On Monday, Venezuela's Supreme Court disavowed Guaido as the president of the National Assembly, rendered powerless by the top court after Maduro's ruling Socialist Party lost control of it in 2016. According to the news outlet Vivoplay, at least 40 servicemen were brought to court in the Venezuelan capital.

However, the Venezuelan's supreme court, which supports Maduro's regime, has previously ruled that any legislation passed by the opposition controlled National Assembly is invalid. Pence said the US supports the body's decision to dub Maduro a "usurper" while pushing for a transitional government.

"The police were shooting and there was tear gas everywhere".

During a press conference in the capital, Caracas, Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez said Pence was "openly calling for a coup", stating Pence was trying to interfere in the affairs of Venezuela.

US Vice President Mike Pence issued a rallying cry Tuesday to Venezuela's opposition on the eve of planned protest marches, calling President Nicolas Maduro a "dictator". The government quickly quelled the uprising, but residents in a nearby slum took to the streets to show their support for the mutineers by burning cars and throwing stones at security forces, who fired back with tear gas.

The vice president also said the US would only recognize the authority of congress, which is controlled by the current opposition party.

"Do you want to be a country colonized by the gringos?" he asked the crowd of several hundred seated before him.

Congress has called on citizens to take to the streets to protest against Maduro tomorrow, the 61st anniversary of the collapse of a military dictatorship.

Local merchant Carmen Martinez said Tuesday her neighbors in Caracas took to the streets because they were fed up with rising costs and a lack of basic goods.

"Maduro is completely isolated from Venezuelans, from the worldwide community and something that has started to happen, he is going isolated by the armed forces which is the only piece of the puzzle that we need to start the transition in Venezuela", Smolansky added.

While Pence says he is delivering the message on behalf of Trump and the American people, the USA president does not participate in the video.

Driving the crisis has been Maduro's decision to plow ahead in the face of global condemnation and take the presidential oath January 10 for a second term widely considered illegitimate after his main opponents were banned from running against him. He has also been playing commander in chief, appearing last week at a military command meeting wearing camouflage fatigues and receiving the blessing of the defense minister, Gen. Vladimir Padrino Lopez.

The Trump administration has formally denounced Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as a dictator and declared the National Assembly as the country's legitimate government.

Mass anti-government demonstrations are expected across Venezuela today, two days after authorities foiled a small-scale armed uprising.

Maduro won elections in May that were boycotted by the opposition and dismissed as a fraud by the European Union, United States and Organization of American States.
