Help comes to Huntsville International Airport TSA workers

Help comes to Huntsville International Airport TSA workers

Nationwide, TSA has said many staff employees are calling out of work because they can't afford to get there. TSA workers are some of the lowest paid federal workers and many live paycheck to paycheck - forcing them to call in sick and make money some other way to cover things like childcare and mortgages.

On Wednesday BWI airport workers held a rally to show their solidarity with TSA workers who were not getting paid because of the government shutdown. Passengers were encouraged to arrive early for evening flights and to contact the airport and airlines for updates.

In a Twitter message sent Saturday evening the agency said it "will be exercising a contingency plan" at BWI "due to excessive callouts".

Newark Liberty International Airport had some of the longest lines in the country last week as more TSA agents called out while the government shutdown continued.

While the TSA says the national average for wait times on standard lines is still normal, hovering around 30 minutes, a blizzard barreling down on the Midwest and Northeast is already making matters worse. In Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson, passengers waited as long as 47 minutes, the TSA said. "TSA estimates that between today, Jan. 18 and Monday, Jan. 21, over 8 million passengers will be screened, which is an increase of 10.8 percent from the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend in 2018".

It estimated that between Friday and Monday, more than 8 million passengers will be screened at security checkpoints nationwide, an increase of 10.8 percent from the same period past year. "Many employees are reporting that they are not able to report to work due to financial limitations", the administration said.
