Trump offers a ‘Dreamers’ deal for border-money proposal

What President Donald Trump billed on Saturday as a compromise to end the country's longest government shutdown pleased neither the Democratic congressional leaders whose buy-in he needs to strike a deal nor the core supporters whose backing has always been at the heart of his insistence on a border wall.

Trump stuck to his demand that US$5.7 billion for this year to fund a US-Mexico border wall be part of any bill to fully reopen the government, an ultimatum Democrats oppose.

President Trump speaks about the partial government shutdown, immigration and border security in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House in Washington on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019.

Democrats indicated on Sunday talk shows a willingness to fund border upgrades of some sort, but they want a permanent fix protecting Dreamers - young people brought to the US illegally as children - and other migrants from deportation, not the three-year-reprieve offered by Trump.

Trump also lashed out at Pelosi personally - something he had refrained from early on - and accused her, without evidence, of having "behaved so irrationally" and moving "so far to the left that she has now officially become a Radical Democrat".

'Trump proposes amnesty. We voted for Trump and got Jeb!,' conservative author Ann Coulter complained on Twitter Saturday.

Trump has offered to extend temporary protections for young people brought to the USA illegally and for those who fled disaster zones.

In an interview on "Fox News Sunday", Vice President Mike Pence reiterated that Trump's proposal "is not amnesty" because "there's no pathway to citizenship".

Pelosi said the offer was a "non-starter" that did "not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people's lives".

Democrats are disparaging a proposal that's expected to be coming from President Donald Trump that the White House has said is aimed at ending the 29-day partial government shutdown.

The New York Democrat said there is only "one way out" of the shutdown.

Earlier on Saturday, Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, said he could not support such an offer.

Dreamers, who are mostly Hispanic young adults, were given authorization to work and protected from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which Trump rescinded in 2017, but which remains in place under a court order.

Pelosi said in a statement before the speech that based on reports of the deal, she would not support it, calling it a "nonstarter" which was unlikely to pass the House.

Opinion polls this month have consistently shown that Americans blame Trump and Republican lawmakers more than Democrats for the shutdown.

The party took over control of the House this year, while Mr Trump's Republicans still have a majority in the Senate. He said Phillips approached him, and "I believed that by remaining motionless and calm, I was helping to diffuse the situation".

"What I don't know is what the president's talking about there, to say amnesty really involves a much larger group", Lankford said.

Pelosi urged Trump "reopen the government, let workers get their paychecks and then we can discuss how we can come together to protect the border".

Trump wrote in a message aimed at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, (D-Calif.).

As shutdown hits the Day 22 mark, it becomes the longest in United States history.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also panned the proposal as "more hostage taking", saying that it was Trump who had "single-handedly" imperiled the future of the immigrants he proposed to help.

Mr. Trump's announcement will coincide with women's marches across the country that both protest Trump administration policies and try to draw attention to other policy priorities for women. The Senior Republican said that if Trump didn't get his wall funding after three weeks, he could declare a national emergency. It's time for Democrats to quit the theatrics and start negotiating. CNN's Jake Tapper pressed her on whether those positions - which she now calls Trump "racist" for holding - meant she was racist at the time.
