World's oldest man dies at the age of 113

Masazo Nonaka, a 113-year-old from Japan who was recognised by Guinness World Records last year as the world's oldest living man, has died, his family said.

"We feel shocked at the loss of this big figure", his granddaughter Yuko said.

Guiness World Records named Nonaka as the world's oldest man in April 2018 when he was 112 years and 259 days old.

The family said he died peacefully from natural causes.

He grew up in a large family and succeeded his parents in running a hot spring inn, which his granddaughter, Yuko Nonaka, later took over.

Reuters reported that Nonaka was a farmer and lumberjack in his youth, later going on to run a hot-spring resort in his hometown Ashoro.

He ran a hot spring inn in his hometown and in retirement enjoyed watching sumo wrestling on TV and eating candies, according to local media.

Nonaka married in 1931 and had five children.

A document kept by local welfare authorities described how he regularly soaked himself in the sulfur-rich hot springs and also had an insatiable appetite for candies, especially strawberry shortcake.

After breakfast every morning, he'd read a newspaper and loved to watch sumo wrestling and samurai dramas on TV. The record holder for the oldest man ever is also Japanese, Jiroemon Kimura, who died at the age of 116 years and 54 days on June 12, 2013, according to the British organisation.

The oldest verified person ever - Jeanne Louise Calment of France - died in 1997 at the age of 122, according to Guinness.
