Australian Open: Kei Nishikori progresses after Kamil Majchrzak retires

There were tiebreaks aplenty on center court, too, as 2016 Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic downed three-time grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (13-11) 7-6 (7-5) in four hours to delay the start of Halep's contest.

Nishikori will play the victor of Joao Sousa and Philipp Kohlschreiber for a place in the fourth round.

Having watched the ball fly past him 59 times from serving machine Karlovic, Nishikori closed out the match with two big first serves of his own, both down the "T", to set up a clash with unseeded Portuguese Joao Sousa.

While watching matches involving the likes of Karlovic, Opelka and 6-foot-10 John Isner can lack excitement due to the lightning-quick points, intrigue indeed rises during tiebreaks.

"I have to say he had it today".

The Japanese fired 69 winners and just 17 unforced errors, needing every single good shot he could hit against the opponent who delivered fury from his initial shot once again, taking the momentum before the decider but just falling short in the end.

"I will try to carry on this confidence on for my next match".

It was the young Pole's first ever match against a top 50 opponent but you would never have known it as he took a two-set lead with a succession of blistering winners off both wings. She beat Tamara Zidansek 6-2, 6-4.

"I have to be happy that I didn't lose today", added the Japanese, who missed the Australian Open a year ago due to a wrist injury. I focused well the last couple points.

His five-set loss to Nishikori included a few missed break-point opportunities at 4-4 in the final set, and a botched volley in the tiebreaker.

"That's nearly my one-year aces (total)", Nishikori joked. "It's frustrating if you can't get the serve". He won 10 straight games after Grand Slam debutant Majchrzak, who was near-untouchable in the first two sets on Margaret Court Arena, was slowed by injuries to his right hand and left thigh in the third set, the ailments eventually forcing him to retire.

WTA Finals victor Elina Svitolina beat Viktoria Kuzmova 6-4, 6-1 in 67 minutes, No. 13 Anastasija Sevastova beat teenage Canadian qualifier Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and No. 21 Wang Qiang Wang had a 6-2, 6-3 win over Aleksandra Krunic.

"As long as my ranking is up and I get into all these tournaments, I don't see any reason I should stop", the world No 73 said.

In the third round, Osaka will face Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei, against whom she holds a 1-0 record.

"I was very fortunate to stay alive in that fourth set".

"She's been playing really well recently so I just hope that it's exciting", she said.
