Mueller not ready for Trump aide's sentencing

Gates, a longtime associate of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, pleaded guilty nearly a year ago to a criminal charge of conspiracy related to his lobbying efforts with Manafort and a charge of lying to investigators.

United States intelligence chiefs concluded that the Russian interference operation was ordered by Vladimir Putin to benefit Trump's campaign and harm Hillary Clinton, his Democratic opponent.

Gates pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and making false statements in connection with Mueller's investigation into Russian Federation, the 2016 election and alleged collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign.

So what does it mean that Mueller still wants to interview Trump?

In addition to misleading investigators about his meetings with Kilimnik, Manafort is also accused of lying about sharing confidential Trump campaign polling data with the former Russian intelligence operative, and discussing a Russia-Ukraine "peace plan" with him. American intelligence agencies and Mueller have said Russian Federation was the source of hacked material released by WikiLeaks during the campaign that was damaging to Hillary Clinton's presidential effort. Kilimnik has denied any ties to Russian intelligence.

The special counsel's office indicted Gates and Manafort twice. But Manafort's lawyers disputed Mueller's claim at the time, saying Manafort "believes he has provided truthful information". What happened instead were hours and hours of interviews with the special counsel and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as per Manafort's deal. Manafort is scheduled to be sentenced by two separate judges, first next month for his eight financial fraud convictions then separately in March for charges to which he pleaded guilty. Newly released documents from Mueller's office reveal the extent of those alleged lies.

Manafort's attorneys deny that he intentionally lied.

Prosecutors on Tuesday cited a May 26, 2018, text to Manafort by someone with apparent access to President Donald Trump, who is referred to as POTUS.

According to the court filing, between August 2, 2016 and March 2018, Manafort and Kilimnik communicated about an issue that is redacted in the filing. Manafort replied: "Yes...even if not one on one". The documents do allege that Manafort had tried to get certain people appointed to positions in the administration, although there is no indication that he was successful.

The last time Barr served as attorney general, in the administration of President George H.W. Bush, he supported that president's use of pardons at the end of the Iran-Contra affair.

The new filing says that Manafort and Kilimnik communicated between August 2, 2016 - in the middle of the presidential campaign - and March 2018, when prosecutors say the two men attempted to tamper with witnesses.

Kilimnik said they did not discuss the campaign but talked about "current news" and "unpaid bills".
