Forecasters eye 'powerful winter storm' to impact NY region this weekend

The weather service said they have high confidence in the storm's impact on the region, but had low to moderate confidence in what kind of precipitation is expected. Wind speeds will frequently gusts to 20 to 30 miles per hour and possibly higher, the NWS reported. "Total snow accumulations of 6 inches or more, along with ice accumulations of up to four tenths of an inch, are possible".

Forecasters are also calling for a few inches of snow Friday. Thursday will bring a chance of light snow in the afternoon. Areas south of Interstate 80 could see a bit more snowfall but it likely won't be more than an inch, she said.

"A powerful winter storm will impact the area Saturday night into Sunday", the National Weather Service wrote on its Hazardous Weather Outlook for Orange and Putnam counties. We're not expecting a lot of snow, it's just coming at an inopportune time when the evening rush is getting underway. Temperatures with this storm will be slightly cooler than what we see over the weekend, but the overall system is much weaker, so snow amounts and precipitation tonight and into early parts of tomorrow morning should be relatively light.

The snow is expected to start after 10 a.m. Saturday, and possibly turn into a mix of freezing rain and sleet in the evening, according to the NWS. The snow will continue into Sunday morning and taper off by the second half of the day. Overnight lows in the teens. Wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour are possible, creating feels-like temperatures around 15-30 below zero to exposed skin. It will soon be replaced by snow flurries, snowstorms and, by Sunday, bitter cold.
