Ahmed's killing 'heinous'; arrest perpetrators asap - Akufo-Addo

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was killed Wednesday night, with reports saying he was shot twice in the chest and once in the neck as he drove in a suburb of the capital, Accra. "Rest in peace, Ahmed", tweeted Aremeyaw, confirming the death of his colleague.

Husein had previously made a complaint to police after a Ghanaian politician, Kennedy Agyapong, showed his photograph on a private television channel.

He promised payment for supporters who took retribution against Husein. "That boy that's very unsafe, he lives here in Madina".

"If he comes here, beat him", Mr Agyapong says in a video published on news site Ghana Web.

Ahmed Hussein-Saule, an investigative journalist whose exposés on soccer corruption in Africa led to the downfall of a FIFA Council member, was murdered by gunmen on motorbikes on his way home.

The lawyer said, "We complained at the time he released the video".

"The government of Ghana must swiftly investigate this crime and bring the killers to justice", IPI Director of Advocacy Ravi R. Prasad said.

Ghana ranked 23rd out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders 2018 World Press Freedom Index - an improvement of three places on the previous year.

The reporter, whose other exposes have lifted the lid on graft in the judicial system, is distinctive for wearing hats and face-coverings to hide his identity.

He also called on Akufo-Addo to get to the bottom of the killing, and urged parliament to "take necessary actions" to improve media and public safety. "It will be in the national interest to arrest the perpetrators of this crime", its chairman, Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo, said in a statement.

On Thursday, the International Press Institute condemned Hussein-Saule's murder, saying it "underscores the grave danger that journalists, especially those who tackle corruption and abuse of power, face in their line of work".

Federation Internationale de Football Association last October banned former Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi for life and fined him almost Sh Sh50 million.

Nyantakyi was the biggest figure to be caught by the journalists but their film also claimed to uncover corruption across Ghanaian soccer, and in soccer in other African countries, with officials, referees and coaches accused of taking bribes for certain favors, sometimes to fix matches.
