Trump signs law ensuring shutdown pay for government workers

President Trump, paying for the meal himself due to the government shutdown, posed in front of the spread that included fast food from popular chains McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King.

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence said several quotes that were attributed to him on social media were fake following his team's dinner at the White House. The new estimates now show that the shutdown will cut quarterly economic growth by 0.13 percent each week that it continues.

The president credited the shutdown with the move because of the White House staff that were furloughed when it began on December 22. "So I think we're going to have a little fun". The White House then doubled-down, releasing a statement on brand with Trump's messaging which blamed the Democrats for the government shutdown, instead of Trump's blind, racist crusade for a southern border wall.

"Pelosi correctly recognizes that the more President Trump shines a spotlight on the very real human tragedies that occur because of her and her party's open border policies, the more of a political loser it becomes for them", Trump continued. If the shutdown lasts another week, government workers will miss their second paycheck this month.

Workers have on average missed more than $5,000 in wages as a result of the shutdown, amounting to more than $200 million in missed wages for each work day since the shutdown began, the Times reported.

Some government employees are being asked to return to work after being initially told to stay home during the shutdown, although they will not be paid on schedule.

Visitors to the White House are finding the doors closed to public tours and first lady Melania Trump had half her office staff furloughed as the effects of the government shutdown pile up.

The Trump administration has shrugged off the pain felt by hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Phillips, who unseated Republican Rep. Erik Paulsen in part by linking him to Trump, has said since joining Congress that he wants to see more cooperation between the parties.

On Jan. 15, Lawrence tweeted: "I never said this by the way..." "I can't guarantee an outcome if you give us three weeks, but I can pretty well guarantee you're getting nowhere quick doing what we're doing", he said. "But also I hope it will be a call to action for our senators and congressman and especially President Trump to make sure that we end this moment in the history of America where families are about to go hungry".
