Dramatic footage shows Kenyan security forces storming hotel during terrorist incident

A Kenyan police officer said 15 bodies had been taken to the morgue.

Kenya has seen a number of terror attacks in recent years - most notably in areas close to the Somali border and in the country's capital.

"The main door of the hotel was blown open and there was a human arm in the street severed from the shoulder", he said, adding that there was an unexploded grenade lay in the lobby.

The death toll from the deadly attack on a hotel complex in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi has risen to at least 14.

As a helicopter flew low overhead witnesses at the scene said the gunmen and security forces were engaged in a fierce firefight.

Hospital officials confirmed at least eight were wounded.

Kenya's national police are on scene to engage the attackers.

No information about casualties was immediately available about the attack at the complex in Nairobi's Westlands neighborhood, which includes a large hotel known as DusitD2, banks and offices.

Simon Crump, who works in the complex, said terrified workers barricaded themselves inside their offices after "several" explosions.

"What happened in Mandera today we did in revenge for what the non-believer government has done to innocent Muslims", Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, a spokesman for the group, told Al Jazeera. Other people were shouting for help and "when we rushed back to try to rescue them, gunshots started coming from upstairs, and we had to duck because they were targeting us and we could see two guys shooting", he said. Several vehicles burned. People were being rushed, even carried, from the scene.

"However, we regret to inform that there have been injuries in the attack and we are in the process of confirming the numbers and types of injuries incurred". Gunfire and explosions were reported near an upscale hotel complex.

Another man working at the compound, who also asked not to be named, told AFP: "There was a bomb, there is a lot of gunfire". A bomb disposal unit was called in, and police blew up a auto they said had explosives inside.

"All police teams including anti-terror officers are at the scene", he said.

The upmarket hotel and complex is around a mile away from the Westgate Shopping Centre, where al-Shabaab terrorists massacred 67 people in 2013.

A large group of women were hurried out by security forces, one woman still in curlers. "I didn't see an attacker". Al-Shabab asserted that 47 people were killed but its Shahada news agency post gave no details. So I went to our offices, I hid myself in the fridge.

Another man, who did not give his name, said he hid in an office. "I didn't see an attacker".

Somalia's Government has expressed its "strong condemnation" of the deadly attack, saying it "once again reveals the disgusting face of terrorism".

A witness reported seeing at least two bodies.

Counselling and other trauma services are being provided.

A reporter at the scene said gunmen and security forces exchanged heavy gunfire.

An armored vehicle has arrived at the ongoing attack with police and army at the scene.

Kenya has been battling Al Shabaab for a number of years following its military intervention in Somalia in October 2011 to fight the organisation.

2014: In November 2014, members of Somalia's al-Shabab armed group hijacked a bus in Kenya and killed 28 non-Muslims on board.
