Brazil says it recognizes Venezuelan opposition leader as president

The number of Venezuelans fleeing is expected to reach 5.3 million by the end of 2019, according to the United Nations, "in what has become the largest exodus in modern Latin American history".

Venezuela's sidelined opposition-controlled parliament called Friday for a mass protest against President Nicolas Maduro in a bid to oust the socialist leader in favor of "a transitional government".

The State Department said in a statement that it stood behind the head of Venezuela's opposition-run congress, Juan Guaido, who said on Friday he is prepared to step into the nation's presidency temporarily to replace Maduro.

Through the social network Twitter, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, said that with contradictory elements the New Granada authorities modified their position before the meddlesome statements in the historical litigation of the Essequibo area.

"We are very hopeful we can be a force for good to allow the region to come together to deliver that". On Thursday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the opposition leader to reaffirm USA support for the Venezuelan National Assembly as the "only legitimate institution" that can "re-establish" democracy in the country.

The two statements were only the latest in a series of Trump administration's attacks on Maduro, whose inauguration to a disputed second term as president took place on Thursday.

Pompeo told reporters traveling with him that the events taking place in Venezuela now were "incredibly important".

"It should be the people of Venezuela, the armed forces, and the worldwide community that give us a clear mandate to assume" the presidency, Guaidó said in Caracas on Friday.

The head of the Organization of American States, Secretary-General Luis Almagro, responded quickly, sending out a tweet recognizing Guaido as Venezuela's interim president.

It was the most specific USA call yet for a change of government in crisis-torn Venezuela, where Maduro has presided over a virtual economic collapse in what was once Latin America's wealthiest nation. "In particular, we support the courageous decision of the National Assembly President, Juan Guaido, to invoke protections under Venezuela's constitution and declare that Maduro does not legitimately hold the country's presidency".

Guaido asked Venezuelans to mass in a nationwide demonstration on January 23, a historically important date for Venezuelans - the day when a mass uprising overthrew dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez in 1958.

"I also do not think that something will significantly change in the worldwide arena because these countries have earlier criticized the May 20 presidential election", Zaemsky added.

Maduro's first agenda item for his second term is a ceremony at Venezuela's military academy, a telling symbol of the importance of the armed forces, Reuters reported.
