WADA 'bitterly disappointed' at Russia's failure to meet deadline

The World Anti-Doping Agency is under mounting pressure to launch fresh sanctions against Russian Federation after the deadline to hand over data from its Moscow anti-doping laboratory expired.

WADA's decision in September allowed Russian athletes to return to competition across all sports despite the country not having complied with all demands following the revelations in 2015 of a state-sponsored doping program.

On 13 September, the group wrote an open letter to Wada saying to readmit Russian Federation without meeting the conditions it had been set would be "a catastrophe for clean sport".

However, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach has since indicated that Russian Federation is unlikely to be suspended from the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo - despite the country's latest misdemeanour.

WADA on Tuesday expressed bitter disappointment that Russian Federation had not met a key deadline.

The decision to lift the ban aroused a wave of criticism directed at Wada and especially at 77-year-old Reedie.

"As soon as we receive a recommendation from the CRC, a teleconference should be organized with the ExCo so that we can discuss and decide on the situation without any further delay", Helleland told the BCC broadcaster.

"In September, WADA secretly moved the goal posts and reinstated Russian Federation against the wishes of athletes, governments and the public", Tygart said. They should only consider a declaration of compliance once WADA has received and verified the electronic data as well as access to all the samples in the Moscow Laboratory.

Nado took a markedly different line to Russian Federation returning to the sporting fold to International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach.

However, the Kremlin said RUSADA's concerns bout new sanctions were "without foundation".

Tygart said Russian Federation missing the deadline should come as no surprise.

United States Anti-Doping Agency chief executive Travis Tygart has called the situation "a joke" and four-time Olympic rowing champion for Great Britain, Sir Matthew Pinsent, highlighted how "dozens of athletes" are still waiting to receive their rightful medals following the Russian doping scandal.

The UK Anti-Doping athletes' commission also released a statement Tuesday calling on Wada to reimpose the sanctions immediately.

"The Russian state need to prove unequivocally that they have learned from the biggest doping scandal under WADA's watch, and that they will for this date forward be committed to a drug-free, transparent regime across worldwide sport".

"We recognise Rusada has been working with Wada in an effort to resolves these issues, but the conditions ... were unequivocal and without data there can be only one outcome", Nado leaders said in a statement.

'In the name of sport, it is time to do what is right'.

"We're standing on the edge of the abyss, and I'm asking you to protect the present and the future of our clean sports, the current and future generations of athletes", Ganus said in a letter addressed to Putin last week.
