Pat Cummins calls captaincy idea "ridiculous"

Pat Cummins calls captaincy idea

With the first match in Wellington ending in a damp draw, yesterday's victory saw the hosts win a fourth successive Test series for the first time.

There was a time when the cricket world used to talk about the quality of Australia's Sheffield Shield with just six teams providing stiff competition.

The home side's most successful pacer in this series, Pat Cummins, is aware of what Australia will be up against, terming the current scoreline of 2-1 in favour of India as a "fair reflection" of Australia's performance against the top-ranked side in the world.

Here is the match preview.

The left-armer, Hazlewood and Cummins are expected to be on restricted duties in comings days but there is now nothing to suggest they will be forced to skip the fourth Test.

Indian skipper and master batsman Virat Kohli on Wednesday played down fears that recurring back spasms could hinder his stellar career, insisting all players get "niggles" and they were "nothing new".

It could even be the pace-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya if the curator listens to the Australian bowlers to leave a lot of grass for the ball to move and bounce.

Taking 20 wickets then becomes the overriding priority despite the equal need to bolster the misfiring batting order.

India thrashed Australia by 137 runs in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. Indian cricket administrators thought the Ranji Trophy was unwieldy and toyed with the idea of making the top rung restricted to six to eight teams.

They will be expected to continue their fine form.

Australia's gun quicks are fit and ready to fire in Sydney but the battle to keep them fresh throughout an unprecedentedly taxing year is only starting.

In those games Marsh has averaged about 40 - and he has also excelled for Western Australia as an opener.

Their batting has been poor and the Aussies have failed to hit the ground running.

Paine hasn't made a first-class hundred in 12 years, but his promotion to No.5 is backed up by the fact he's averaged 35 in the past year to be Australia's second-best performed batsman behind Khawaja.

Usman Khawaja is the only Australian to score a Test century in nearly 12 months.

Ravindra Jadeja captured five wickets on the MCG's drop-in pitch, comprehensively winning his duel of spinners with Nathan Lyon, who took just one.

When and where to watch the match?

In a dramatic u-turn taken by the BCCI, it has emerged that R Ashwin will be assessed before the toss on Thursday morning to see if he can slot into India's XI for the Sydney Test against Australia. The match will be telecast live on the Sony Ten network.
