Minimum Wages Rising In 20 States And Several Cities

Hourly workers in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and Washington state will see the minimum wage increase on or soon after January 1. Each will eventually boost its minimum wages to at least $12 and as much as $15 an hour by phasing in the change.

South Dakota is one of 20 states that are raising minimum wages for 2019.

Since the federal minimum wage was last raised in 2009, it has lost about 9.6 percent of its purchasing power to inflation, according to a 2017 report by the Pew Research Center.

South Dakota's current $8.85 minimum wage increases to $9.10 on January 1. The federal minimum for workers who receive tips is $2.13 per hour.

Currently, 29 states and the District of Columbia have minimum wages above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. In Seattle, the minimum wage will be $16. In Michigan, legislators this year passed a wage increase before it was slated to go on the ballot in November, then, after the election, passed laws reducing the wage increases.

"Fifteen dollars an hour has become the new minimum wage, meaning that that's to afford the basics", he said.

The minimum wage in Korea is calculated by dividing the monthly salary by the number of working hours. In 2020, it will increase again to $15 per hour. It took another year for voters to raise the statewide minimum wage.

The debate over the minimum wage has long divided both Americans and economists.

"It may not have motivated every lawmaker to agree that we should go to $15", David Cooper, senior economic analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, told the Associated Press.

According to the Labor Ministry, the minimum wage consisting of only basic pay and fixed allowances had caused employers to violate the Minimum Wage Act even if they paid high salaries consisting of low basic wages and large bonuses. "But it's motivated many of them to accept that we need higher minimum wages than we now have in much of the country".
