John Kelly embarrasses Donald Trump in White House exit interview

The partial government shutdown began December 22 after Trump bowed to conservative demands that he fight to make good on his vow and secure funding for the wall before Republicans lose control of the House on Wednesday.

Republicans were still able to maintain their control of the Senate - making the final passage of the proposal uncertain.

Trump's tweet was a shift from recent remarks that indicated he was digging in on his demand for $5 billion to start constructing a wall or barrier on the U.S. Mexico border as part of a deal on spending that would reopen parts of the government.

"Everyone has to get back in Washington", U.S. Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., said on Monday's MetroNews "Talkline". The Pentagon is mostly not affected, since a spending bill for the military was passed by Congress and signed by Trump earlier in 2018. It was sitting over there.

It's unclear if the Senate will pass such a bill again.

The meeting will be the first sit-down between Trump and Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in 22 days since their contentious sit down in the Oval Office last month. The former Breitbart writer, a frequent television defender of the president, either quit or was sacked in 2017 partly in protest that Trump's first major speech about the US military strategy in Afghanistan made no mention of what Gorka called "Radical Islam".

"We are not giving up".

Trump also tweeted congratulations to newly inaugurated Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a populist conservative who like Trump was elected to shake up the status quo.

Graham told CNN before his lunch with Trump that "there will never be a deal without wall funding".

"It's so heartbreaking. There is more trash and human waste and disregard for the rules than I've seen in my four years living here", Snider said. "But we've got to move away from the blame game". We know the problems with this when we have openings on the border.

But he added: "Illegal immigrants, overwhelmingly, are not bad people", describing many migrants as victims of traffickers. We have sex trafficking happening.

The news comes one day after outgoing Chief of Staff John Kelly said in an interview with the LA Times that funding for a concrete wall along the entire border was already off the table.

Non-border-related agencies include the Departments of Agriculture, Interior, Transportation, Commerce and Justice.

"Any way we can intercept those people who are coming across illegally or inappropriately", he said.

The Democratic package to end the shutdown would include one bill to temporarily fund the Department of Homeland Security at current levels - with $1.3 billion for border security, far less than the $5 billion Trump has said he wants for the wall - through February 8 as talks continued. When he spoke to Pete Hegseth on Monday night, Trump blasted the "pure obstruction" while talking up the border wall as a crucial element of national security.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have been invited, along with their deputies Sen. "Whatever I have to do to put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads that's what i'm going to do", he said.
