Trump's potential next chief of staff pick leaving White House

"I am in the process of interviewing some really great people for the position of White House Chief of Staff. Fake News has been saying with certainty it was Nick Ayers, a spectacular person who will always be with our #MAGA agenda", Trump said in a message on Twitter, referring to his slogan "Make America Great Again". And allies are pitching Trump on even more contenders. And that's in the best of times. "It's 24/7. It's thankless". And his almost six years as a congressman - including on the House Oversight Committee - could be helpful to a president investigated by the new House Democratic majority next year.

Speculation is mounting over who will be US President Donald Trump's new chief of staff after the man believed to be the top candidate said he too was leaving the government.

According to reports, Mr Kelly was planning to announce on Monday that he was standing down but Mr Trump let slip the news during an on-camera briefing with reporters on Saturday.

"It's not been anything that I've been out advocating for", Meadows told Fox News, but he added that "my life changed" after Ayers chose to pull out of the job.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told CBS' "Face The Nation" he's already got his hands full trying to broker a trade deal with China within a tight 90-day time limit. The president said on Saturday that Kelly would leave the post by year's end.

There were several people who were reported to be on the president's short list who seem to have taken their names out of the running. Trump often complained that Kelly, a retired four-star Marine general, was not politically shrewd enough for the task.

Before Ayers withdrew from consideration, the White House had been planning to have Kelly announce his departure and Ayers's ascension at a senior staff meeting Monday morning.

As Democrats search for a candidate to run in the next elections in late 2020, James Comey - the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief abruptly fired by Trump after he came to power - said voters must "use every breath we have to make sure the lies stop on January 20, 2021".

Trump pushed Ayers to commit to two years, but he declined.

Trump will reportedly not consult Kelly on his replacement, people familiar with the situation told The Times.

The search comes after the president's initial choice for the job bowed out and as his White House braces for an onslaught of political and legal challenges in the coming year.

Yet Trump once mocked his predecessor for chief of staff turnover.

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney is no longer interested in the job, said a source close to him, adding that he would prefer to serve at the Department of Commerce or Treasury "if that's where the president needed him".

"We'll be announcing who will be taking John's place".

Ayers and Trump weren't able to agree on a plan for Ayers to stay in the job for two years as the president desired, a White House official said Sunday. The Republicans spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.
