Britain's PM Theresa May vows to fight leadership challenge

Britain's PM Theresa May vows to fight leadership challenge

"A new leader wouldn't have time to renegotiate a withdrawal agreement and get the legislation through Parliament by Mar 29 So one of their first acts would have to be extending or rescinding Article 50, delaying or even stopping Brexit when people want us to get on with it", she said.

All Conservative MPs can vote.

A result is expected fairly quickly after the voting finishes.

"A change of leadership. will put our country's future at risk and create uncertainty when we can least afford it", she said.

What Happens During A Confidence Vote?

The last no-confidence vote against a Conservative leader, when the party was in opposition in 2003, was held the day after the Committee chairman announced he had received enough letters.

There will be a leadership contest to decide her replacement. "None of that would be in the national interest". That followed her decision to delay a vote on Brexit which she admitted she was certain to lose.

"The House of Commons is divided not by parties, but by factions", Britain's longest-serving lawmaker and a former Conservative minister, Ken Clarke, said Monday. "I have served it as an activist, councilor, MP, shadow minister, home secretary and now as prime minister".

British Prime Minister Theresa May, left, is greeted by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker at EU headquarters in Brussels, Dec. 11 2018. "The victor of that contest would not immediately become prime minister and there could be heavy pressure to call a general election".

"The UK changed prime minister in May 1940 - in the middle of a monstrously greater national crisis than this".

Judi pointed out: "When the going gets tough May's body language always does get tougher but where her signals were weakest was on her Brexit deal update".

Asked on the sidelines of an European Union meeting in Brussels what May can expect from Merkel, Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Roth replied: "I hope they will wish each other Merry Christmas, strength and all the best for the new year".

But Cabinet colleagues rallied to May's support.

What does it mean for Brexit?

May held talks this weekend with leaders including EU President Donald Tusk and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

May is in Berlin for talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel and was attempting to meet the German leader when she came up against a pesky vehicle door and found herself desperately attempting to make an exit, much like her current Brexit negotiations with the EU.

"Small businesses are keen to prepare [for Brexit] but they still don't know, some 15 or 16 weeks out, what it is they have been asked to prepare for", said Colin Borland, a director at the Federation of Small Businesses. They can have their moment of 'we're free!' cartharsis, but once the exhilarating whiff of liberation has faded, the realisation dawns that their leap of faith is a leap into the unknown.

The PM thought she had seen off an attempt by this group of Brexiteers to get rid of her last month.

Why are they trying to get rid of her?

May had insisted that lawmakers have only two options: accept her negotiated deal, or "crash out" of the European Union with no deal.

The Northern Ireland - Ireland border can be kept open and individuals can be given a duty free, customs free and tariff free allowance of about 500 pounds on that border so no one needs to be bothered.

Sterling rose by more than 0.4% against the dollar and by more than 0.2% against the euro on Wednesday morning, after Tory rebels triggered the vote on May's leadership of their party.

"We will therefore defer the vote scheduled for tomorrow and not proceed to divide the house (of Commons) at this time". Two sources told BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg the vote was being pulled.

May added that the vote would only serve the Labour Party and its leader Jeremy Corbyn.

"The Conservative Party's internal divisions are putting people's jobs and living standards at risk".

All 315 Tory legislators can vote on the confidence motion.
