Helus was among the first to arrive on the scene, entering the bar with a California Highway Patrol officer. A young man who was inside the club came up to me and said, 'You know what?
He said he and others smashed their way out of the bar onto a balcony and then jumped down to safety.
"We just tried to get down as fast as we could and get out of there".
"If the Lord took him away, we know that he's in a better place", he said.
The security guard at the bar, who was unarmed, was shot during the incident.
Authorities said he had no criminal record, but in April officers were called to his home, where deputies found him angry and acting irrationally.
"They felt he might be suffering from PTSD, the fact he was a veteran and had been in the Corps", Dean said.
"They called out our crisis intervention team, our mental health specialists who met with him, talked to him and cleared him", the sheriff said.
Long was a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, where he'd served as a machine gunner.
Dean said that the shooter had a handgun and that at this early stage in the investigation he believed he had only one gun.
