Explosive devices sent to Obama and Clintons

Chappaqua police said authorities in New Castle assisted the FBI, the Secret Service and Westchester County police with the investigation into the package sent to Clinton.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller, centre, arrives outside Time Warner Center on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018, in NY.

CNN says its offices in NY have been evacuated because of a suspicious package.

The U.S. Secret Service said the package addressed to Clinton was discovered late Tuesday, intercepted at a mail screening facility near her home in a NY suburb where she lives with her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

The New York Police Department was called to the Center Mall, which houses the New York offices of CNN, to investigate two suspicious packages on Thursday that were later deemed safe.

President Donald Trump accused the US news media on Friday of using reporting on the suspect in least 14 bombs sent to some of his prominent critics to score political points against him.

"There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media", CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a statement read on CNN.

"These terrorising acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law".

Trump's Thursday tweet came as suspected explosive devices addressed to actor Robert De Niro and former Vice President Joe Biden were found Thursday.

A heavy police presence surrounded the facility in Manhattan, New York. As former presidents, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are both under Secret Service protection.

The law enforcement official said the devices intended for Obama and Clinton appear to be rudimentary but functional and similar to the ones sent to the home of billionaire investor and major Democratic donor George Soros, which was discovered earlier this week.

The bomb squad is on scene.

The Secret Service said media reports that it has intercepted a suspicious package bound for the White House are incorrect.

The device was discovered early Wednesday morning at the Clinton's home.

Trump regularly attacks Obama and Clinton and frequently characterizes CNN as "fake news".

By putting the word "bomb" in quotation marks, the president appeared to question whether the devices, which federal experts say were not capable of exploding, meet the definition of a bomb.

The devices, which officials said shared a similar design, were aimed at prominent Democrats and a cable news network often criticized by political conservatives.
