United States indicts Russian woman for interfering in 2018 election

Two companies run by Mr Prigozhin's - Concord Management and Consulting LLC and Concord Catering - also allegedly funded the project.

The case against Khusyaynova was unsealed on the same day that United States law enforcement and intelligence agencies issued a warning about attempts by Russia, China, Iran and other foreign entities to interfere with 6 November congressional elections, in which Trump's Republicans are trying to maintain majority power in Congress, and national elections in 2020.

The statement went on to say, "These activities also may seek to influence voter perceptions and decision-making in the 2018 and 2020 USA elections".

The feds charged a 44-year-old Russian woman, Elena Khusyaynova, with conspiracy to defraud the U.S., reports the Washington Post.

Special counsel Robert Mueller indicted 13 Russian individuals and three companies allegedly involved in meddling in the United States political system in February, which included Prigoyhin.

"This one shows that the threat from Russian Federation is not over", said Barbara McQuade, a former US Attorney in MI.

The charges, filed Friday in the Eastern District of Virginia, accuse Elena A. Khusyaynova of St. Petersburg with using social media platforms to create thousands of social media and e-mail accounts - appearing to be from USA persons - to "create and amplify divisive social media and political content".

Foreign countries are using social media to amplify divisive issues in American society by sponsoring content in English-language media, such as Russia's RT and Sputnik news outlets, the statement said.

The indictment against Khusyaynova details her budgeting for Project Lakhta month by month for the first six months of 2018, a total of more than 650 million rubles, or $10 million, details that suggested United States investigators have gained detailed inside knowledge of the IRA's operations.

Khusyaynova is a resident of St. Petersburg, Russia, and is not in USA custody. She is the first individual to be indicted for attempting to interfere in the 2018 USA elections, according to a government official with knowledge of the matter.

Both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Homeland Security Departments have set up foreign influence task forces to detect such operations and share threat information within the government, with tech firms and state and local election officials.

The ODNI statement did not, however, say that such efforts had taken place.

The Internet Research Agency "tampered with, altered, or caused a misappropriation of information with the objective or effect of interfering with or undermining election processes and institutions", specifically the 2016 United States presidential race, the Treasury Department said earlier this year.

The new prosecution was brought not by Mueller but by the Justice Department's national security division and prosecutors from the Eastern District of Virginia. He has been hit with sanctions by the USA government.

The two companies were among three entities and 13 Russians who were accused of meddling votes to favour of US President Donald Trump and oust his opponent, Hilary Clinton.
